How many more are actually listening then? Again that would be an estimate I guess.

those 7-8K nodes are only reachable nodes that 21.co can access and they are accepting incoming and outgoing connections at the same time.
there are a lot more nodes that are listening, which are downloading the blockchain and holding a full copy and verifying,... they are just not on that list you linked.

I'm aware we can't know for sure how many users bitcoin actually has. But it would be interesting to know how the number of nodes have grown in comparison with the number of users.
Looking at https://bitnodes.21.co it says at the moment there are 7856 nodes. So, for the sake of the example we say there are 1 million bitcoin users in 2017. That means only ~0.8% of users are running a node.
My question is what were these numbers throughout the years? I'm guessing in 2009 it was 100% of users running a node and has since declined. Anybody want to fill out the blanks and give their estimate?
