SSL means there is persistent connection encrypted with SSL, HTTPS means HTTP over SSL. So not same; not only in Electrum.

To rule out bad network configuration, can you try to connect to any of the servers outside of Electrum? Try:

nc -v servername 50002

And see if it says "connected".

I don't think Electrum servers are dropping SSL support. Have you changed your router recently by any chance?

SSL certs were changed following the heartbleed bug. Maybe electrum needs to be told to refresh its cached certs and by deleting them you can force it to do so.

OK, i found out how to fix the issue. It was really trivial.

In the network connection dialog, change the connection type from "SSL" to "HTTPS". Problem solved. Or rather - this is only a workaround.

Apparently, some electrum servers are no longer providing the "SSL" service and moving to "HTTPS" instead ? Am I understanding this right ?

Can we get some official from Electrum staff to answer ?

I just got this again today too. Had to reinstall and recover wallet. My friend has had it occur several times also.

Clearly this is no way to be managing money, feels like I'm risking it using electrum. I guess I'll have to look elsewhere.

That is weird, one day Electrum was connected normally and everything worked. And then, i closed it and started again. After I did that it never worked anymore.

There were absolutely no changes made to the system Electrum version (it was 1.9.7 and now it is 1.9.8 - still the same issue).

I have tried different servers on the list, I even tried connecting to IP (as I read on the forums that it may be a DNS issue).

The system is Linux Mint 16 (based on Ubuntu).

Any ideas ?
