The best protection we have is the huge ammount of data that is produced, most of them useless.

We can stay more or less anonymous, if we manage to avoid things that would attract attention to the surveilance agencies

Right, for regular porn surfing, google search engine is fine.

Well for now the main problem is when Big Data sets can be converted into measurable relevant data
If it can filter out all the noise then we have a problem.
Most of that data is social data so once they are able to get everyone's information innocent or not it brings the idea of anonymity to uncharted waters.

Did we ever really have any kind of privacy anyway? I am convinced they have been doing something like this for a long while now and they will continue to do so for as long as they are able to. It's seriously being part of Big Brother only they can and will use it against you if you are found to be doing anything you should not be doing.
TL;DR No we do not.

The reason that we don't have privacy anymore is because of the fact that no one has stood up to the fact that the government is spying on everyone. I would say that once the next election cycle (presidential) comes around, there will be many people (in congress) running on a platform to reduce the spying that the government does on it's own citizens and these people will likely win the election.

And yet they wont do anything. the only one that seems like he would (Ron Paul) isn't going to even run.
We don't need a president to run (I said during the presidential election cycle, not the president himself) we just need enough congressmen and senators to be willing to scale back the patriot act and the powers of the NSA.

That is why there is a big battle to sort and categorize big data at this time
Conferences on it and lots of money being spent to sort that information since they may have access to it but cannot filter through it fast enough.

The search engine, named ICREACH, contains information on the private communications of foreigners as well as on millions of American citizens innocent of any wrongdoing.

ICREACH, initially projected to cost between $2.5 million and $4.5 million per year, can be used by more than 1,000 analysts working at 23 US government agencies that perform intelligence work, according to a 2010 memo.

Information shared through the program can be used to track people's movements, map out their networks of friends and potentially reveal religious affiliations or political views.

Collecting porn surfing habits from the population is a huge waste of money.

The effectiveness of the data collection should come into question when government do the budget.

Orwell wrote 1984 as a warning. NSA mistook it for an instruction manual.

Orwell is an evil genius plotting the whole thing even after his death.

Disturbing facts.

But then, the kind of data collected might be totally useless for actionable plan.

The problem with all this spying and archiving is because it becomes moot after some point.

1.  Terrorists overseas are already untouched by the US law - so why do they care?

2.  Mark Karpeles has already been busted sending encrypted messages on the otherwise very public twitter.  Could any encrypted message be broken?  Yes but when we're talking about the scale that the NSA is resorting to it would mean a logistical nightmare for them.

If I recall some German agency made their employees switch over to typewriters but they could had just resorted to some encryption or some secret OS.

4. all of your data is stored by agencies but unless your constantly talking using the key word flags, you will 99.99% will never have your phone call listened to or read......
I stripped your post down to a judgement call that you made.

And you know what?  Here's mine.

<> Oh and you know what?  When you go through an airport body image scanner nobody's going to oogle your sexy body.  Well, unless you are really hot.  <>

And you know what else?  Here's a klepto's.

Oh and you know what?  Most of the time I walk down store isles and don't lift anything.  Unless I want it.

See?  You thought you were talking about the SOLUTION.

But, no.  You were talking about the PROBLEM.

I think the level of scrutiny is overblown. But it is certainly heading towards total surveillance. Plan accordingly.

knew this ages ago, but it has no relation to bitcoin so can the tin foil hat people please stay on topic.

but i will say this offtopic seeing as im already posting.
1. start your research in the 1960's with project echelon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECHELON.

2. did you really think governments read through every boring phone call or email until they got to the good stuff... no for the last decade atleast they have had a good search engine to look for the key words like 'osama' 'bomb' 'nuclear explosion'

3. and where do you think google/youtubes funding came from to make the new feature of 'subtitles' which converts audio into text transcript, which was then searchable.. and then later released as a consumer service we have now as utilised as a simple 'subtitles'. google and microsoft have been working on voice to text for years, all funded by government.

4. all of your data is stored by agencies but unless your constantly talking using the key word flags, you will 99.99% will never have your phone call listened to or read.

5. oh and if you use google chromes browser for web broswer based chat where you see the small speaker icon in the tab.. its a subtle hint there recording that too. think of it more like a 'ear' rather then a speaker symbol.

6. now take your government hype off a bitcoin page and lets talk about bitcoin
