I thought NVC was based off of older PPC code when proof-of-stake wasn't actually working yet, but I just looked it up and maybe I'm wrong. Sunny King of PPC helped Balthazar patch something that was broke. My bad.
There are no actual differences between PoS implementations in NVC & PPC. Except for mint rate and entropy source.

NVC isn't a competitor for PPC. It's PPC friendly project, represents the same targets and ideology. Even if the NVC will not be successful in the long run, one of the main targets will be achieved. Because it will help PPC project with PoS implementation stress-testing and promotion.

I do see posts saying it is a scam coin though because 200k coins were pre-mined before it was released to public? https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.1518622
The actual info was published a long time ago, just one example:

You seen posts from LTC fundamentalists. They systematically posting lie about all altcoins except the LTC, and ignoring any arguments.

He helped with entropy problem solution. This problem was caused by original PoS protocol v0.3 incompatibility with my implementation of the p2pool support (I developed it for PoS v0.2 protocol).

P.S NVC uses scrypt only for PoW. PoS proofhashes still calculated using sha256.

This site also says there was a big premine in NVC:

How will NVC be expensive to maintain? It's based on proof of stake as well...

In PPC, hashing is needed to mint coins. Eventually though, hashing will be needed less and less as enough coins are minted, and proof-of-stake will matter more, so there will be less hashing. Thus, PPC approaches an energy-efficient model which is going to be VERY valuable if an energy crisis hits - Bitcoin and NVC will be so much more expensive just to maintain compared to PPC.

edit: NVC is based on proof-of-stake so it is more energy efficient than Bitcoin, but scrypt mining consumes more energy than SHA so it is less energy-efficient than PPC, just fyi if you care.

hi cryptocurrency experts!

is there any difference between PPC and NVC except the hashing algorithm?

besides that: is the hashing algorithm important with the proof of stake concept?

can somebody explain why hashing is still needed?

thanks!
