You need to be mentally ill to live in the US.

And especially so to live in NY.

Honestly? I even think several times about visiting my friends in the U.S, as much as I like my friends there I'm fucking terrified of the xenophobes in the south and the debt dumping pensioners elsewhere, oh and don't get me started on airport security.

The only way I could feel properly safe going to the U.S would be either in a armoured strip miner or a tank.

You can be involuntarily committed in NYS already.  Under state law you can be confined for 72 hours for "observation."  Then a doctor may commit you involuntarily if they see fit and to fight it you must go before a judge where you will probably loose.  Confinement without arrest or trial.
