Their stated reasoning for the Feb 19 date was so that people would not create a bunch of accounts just to get XRP. With what's going on with the old dormant accounts, it seems they need to take a new tack.

I made an account in 2011 because that's when I heard of bitcoin, but I only made 1 or 2 posts back then.  Then I made a few more so I could get the XRP giveaway.

A bunch of accounts (like mine) were created in 2011 because SilkRoad was down a few times in 2011 and once or twice they made a thread explaining what is going on with SilkRoad on here but you were not able to access the thread without an account. I dont remember the exact circumstances but this is how I made my account and I think this is true for a lot of people.

Yes I noticed this too.  My guess is that it is every dormant sock puppet account getting activated plus I've now seen ads for people trying to buy up old forum accounts so they can get the free xrp.  I think it may be time for a new/different giveaway.

considering if the 50k xrp = .5-1 BTC.. thats $17-34 PER ACCOUNT.

That adds up fast if you can get access to 50 accounts.

You guys are probably right but, it's not necessarily true in every case. I've been lurking here for a while but started posting just recently, mostly in order to fund my Ripple account. Then I've mentioned all this my my kids that also have been following the Bitcoin project for a while but registered only recently for the Ripple giveaway.

Interesting.  Easy to believe, sad to see, but no big surprise.
Of course the OpenCoin folks could just be smart and look for this sort of pattern before giving XRP away.  Hopefully, my pattern doesn't look suspicious Wink

But we also really can't expect the world to be a very fair place.  Note that 40,000 XRP is just 1/250,000 of the overall 100 B XRP that exist, so unless there are a whole lot of very successful scammers out there, this would not be a big effect.

Noticed a really strange trend on the Ripple Giveaway thread; a lot of the members posting there have exactly 6 posts (enough to get out of the newbie forum), and were all registered around the same dates back in '11, despite making their first posts today.  What's up with that?  Someone made a bunch of accounts for occasions such as this?  Tongue

i'm not sure if this is related, but recently i received a private message to purchase my user account for .1btc...just seemed a possible correlation in my mind...a noteworthy curiosity...

Yes, I really think they need to try a different giveaway.  This clearly got them a lot of attention, but if people are buying old forum accounts I think they are at the point of diminishing returns if their goal is broad distribution to encourage use.

Still, I didn't think the xrp to bitcoin price would keep going against btc, so clearly they know something I don't.

Check out https://ripple.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=894

In addition to the 2011 accounts spaming the forum, someone is contacting people on this forum through IM offering to buy their bitcointalk.org accounts.   Ripple people sees no issue with this.  Nice plan!

It has been kind of obvious that this would happen from the beginning.

with 50k XRP worth 1BTC+, it's a pretty lucrative gig. I wish I could have predicted that people can be so dumb to give away XRP on the forum. I could easily register 100+ accounts.
