I thought it was a strong password at the time. When you say 'paper wallet' what do you mean? All the coins are stored electronically be it on a cold wallet or online. Do you mean keep the password on paper? Thanks for your advise nevertheless.

Thanks once again and this has been a very difficult learning curve indeed. I thought I had done the right thing by installing electrum onto my usb stick however I guess that didn't go far enough? No one has had access to my computer nor usb (for those of you who asked.) The only thing I can think of is someone must have compromised my laptop and accessed my seed on a document somewhere within the files of my laptop? I bought bitcoins when they were only at $120 and today I am left with a big fat zero. I don't think I will be dealing with bitcoins ever again. This is the second time I lost coins, once via MTGox and now this. C'est la vie......Thank you everyone, you have been very supportive and helpful indeed. For that I am appreciative.
Rather than being frustrated just use hardware wallet but if you don't know lot of technical details than paper wallet can be ultimate solution for you. Don't forget to encrypt your electrum file, have you used strong password to encrypt your electrum wallet?

sorry for your loss..

luigi2169 there is almost no chance to get back your coins-but maybe you can help others with some additional information,do you use any security software on your PC/do you download some program/file from internet in the last few days?

Hi Lucius, I use Malwarebytes premium edition and in my last scan shortly after discovering that the coins had gone missing it showed that there was no threat/virus/malware? Like I mentioned, I kept my wallet on a pen drive/usb. I am at a loss as to what happened?

Do you have antivirus and firewall on your PC or just MB Premium?is it possible that someone else has access to your pen drive/usb, maybe some friend or family member? It is also possible that you exposed some of your private keys or seed, only one private key can be used to generate seed for wallet.

Unfortunately as I said chance to get back your BTC is almost 0.You should format your hard disk/install fresh copy of windows and if you plan to use BTC in future get hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger.

- First make sure that you have installed electrum from the official site.
- Also make sure that you haven't saved your recovery phrase anywhere online
- Malwarebytes  Roll Eyes Just buy some good antivirus for around $50 and scan with that rather than with free antivirus or animalwares.
- Install windows 8 or 10 which is quite secure than window 7 or lower versions.
- To store large amounts use either paper wallet printed with offline computer or hardware wallets like trezor.

Recently I opened up my Electrum wallet only to see that ALL my bitcoins have left my account! I can see a minus sign next to my bitcoins showing that they have left my wallet. The light on the bottom right is green and is fully synched. I have NO idea how this happened as I did not check my wallet for over 10 days and these coins disappeared 3 days ago. I have checked on blockchain.info and managed to find an address where my bitcoins have gone to. I believe that my system (Windows 7) has been compromised and someone has stolen my bi tcoins. Please, if anyone can assist me in retrieving my bitcoins, I will offer a handsome reward. Thank you.

The possibility to retrieved your bitcoin is lower than 1% the transaction or the transferring of your bitcoin is already made and it cant be reversed for a reason the only way you can see your bitcoin is by the transaction but you cant go further than that sorry for the lost.

For this reason, I have always said that to store coins in online wallet is always easier and safer. Your PC is always more vulnerable to hackers. Now you will not return your bitcoins. I feel sorry for you. If you plan on storing your coins in your PC then do it on the computer which never goes online.

If his PC was infected with some malware/keylogger then there is no differences where he store his coins, desktop or online wallet is exposed to the same risk as hacker need his password or log in data to to get access to the desktop or online wallet. There is a big problem with online security these days, some users not use any protection and they click on everything.Good antivirus+firewall and Malwarebytes Premium + updates of OS is something every user needs, especially if kept such value on PC.

Thanks for your tips so far. I kept the wallet on a USB which is what makes it even stranger? I only used the USB periodically to check that my bitcoins were still there. I did a full Malware scan using Malwarebytes and they did not find any Malware. I use a subscription version of Malwarbytes and not the free version. I am at a loss as to what happened?

Unfortunately, there is almost next to zero chance of you retrieving your bitcoin. But it seems like your computer has been compromised. Where did you save your private keys?

Also, do a full scan on your computer using your preferred antivirus/antimalware; preferrably, MalwareBytes.

you can just check the transaction in the blockchain but transaction are irreversible and you most probably have your system infected by some keylogger/malware, if you want i can send you a pm with some instruction how to check your system if it's infected and by what.
Let me know.

Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed. If the funds were sent to an address that is not yours then they are lost for ever sadly. It's either someone used your PC or you have an infected computer (in that case, you shouldn't store bitcoins on it as of now)
