Should I watch this movie?

This is the sci-fi movie of the decade, and probably the best movie Christopher Nolan ever made. Just go for it, without a second thought.  Wink

that's part of the fun, almost all science fiction films break scientific rules

Nolan only uses the science to convey a sense of reality of interstellar travel so that we may become more involved in the story

Nolan raises some important points though. In most science fiction eg. Mass Effect people are flying all over the galaxy and somehow everyone has the same "clock".

Any major interstellar travel would mean a lot of time dilation because Mass Effect etc. has fixed timelines for everyone in the galaxy, but Einstein theorised and it is proven now that time is linked with space in this 4D "glue". Even if you fold spacetime to instantly go from one point in 4D to another point, in 4D there are different "timespeeds" at different points in 4D.

So just like Space Odyssey 2001 expanded our consciousness of space travel beyond tabloid sci-fi of that generation, so does Interstellar expand our consciousness beyond the Star Trek/ video game idea of space travel.

Nolan presents both a scientific, spiritual and socioeconomic case of what interstellar travel for humans really would mean.

I still love Mass Effect 1,2,3 though, best sci-fi games ever. Deus Ex HR comes second.

"They" = people from the future right? How would anyone create a 5th dimension..... but ok I'll assume people from the future figured out all the laws of gravity and was somehow able to create this.

Yes, the movie implies that we don't have to depend on aliens but mankind will harness knowledge and technology to go beyond our current limitations. There are still immense amounts we don't know about physics etc.

But how did the guy specifically go to the "library"? Did "they" know it would have been him and specifically set up that place for his arrival?

Yes, somehow the beings knew that setting up the library space would be important. However, Cooper had to specifically locate the right spacetime coordinates in the massive library through "Love" ("Love is the one thing that trancends etc...")

Why was he rooting for Murph to make him stay... and how did she figure out he should stay? Would he still save the earth if he stayed?

At that point he was very distressed that he was away from Murph for decades, and felt that it was all not worth it, he should have stayed. So he tried to spell out "STAY" in morse code (by pushing the right books out of the bookshelf). Murph was decoding the communication through morse code from what she thought was a ghost.

Indeed, if he stayed, he wouldn't have saved the Earth. But, if he had stayed, the books wouldn't have fallen out in the first place, because he caused the books to fall out. This is a paradox.

That is, how could the books fall out if he didn't push them.

So, which happened first - him pushing the books from the other "side" or him leaving the earth to get to where he can push the books.

Also it implies that "Love" is transdimensional, that is, his bond with his daughter transcends the limitations of space and time, a key theme in the movie.

SPOILER ALERT

To answer your question. Entering the wormhole is passage through 5th dimension from 4D (spacetime) to 4D (spacetime) point. So far no problems.

Entering the black hole goes to 5th dimension. In this dimension "they" created a 4d (spacetime) space with extra access to points in 4D (spacetime). So he is able to communicate through gravity with Murph as a girl. He cannot change causality though that's why he can only do what he has already done.

Then once the "space" in 5th dimension is collapsed "they" spit him out to near where the wormhole is (conveniently earthside).

As a plot device the 5th dimension "library" is so that he can transmit information about the black hole to Earth. It also presents the paradox question (have we done everything we have done, we can never change anything) besides closing the "loop" on the mystery of the gravity anomalies, and presenting the theory that "they" (beings) are not aliens but highly technologically advanced humans.

But mainly if he didn't travel through the black hole to gain data that can only be obtained from ~inside~ a black hole, and if beings didn't set up the "Library" then he wouldn't have been able to save earth. But with his bravery and courage and the love between father and daughter earth is saved. Touching, no?

SPOILER ALERT <-- I think you forgot to put this

I was confused at the end.... so he went inside the black hole, and somehow ended up in a weird 5th dimension where he was able to see his home and communicate w/ Murph at a young age?

How does that work
