Yeah, and if we had armed guards around our entire boarder you'd still be screaming "how pathetic is our country". Perhaps the documentary maker was just a child during 9/11, but if you recall, they lived in our country for years before pulling off that terrible tragedy.
One of the burdens we bare of being the country that stands (in part) for "give us your weak and your tired" is the reality that some of those people may want to cause harm and in the even that those people rise up we have a Nation of Patriots to defend our country.

the statue of liberty was finished and put on display in 1886, that quote about "give us your weak and tired" was not what america was founded on by the way. it was a poem that was created by someone else that was affixed to the outside of statue of liberty decades after the statue of liberty was already there, it was only to honor the person who helped build it because they raised funds for it and it was a poem they wrote. by the way they were not american so trying to make it seem like americans came up with that slogan for what america is all about is wrong.
so when something happens on our border or terrorists do slip in or some kind of mass poisoning happens in a water supply or whatever, are you still going to say we don't need the security? we obviously had a few trillion for a war, why dont we have 40 billion for security? politics is why, and mainly democrats are responsible for it. they keep promising they will do better border security but they are lying because they want more poor people to come across and vote for them. republicans dont want this because they are more fisical minded in that regard and dont want to pay a ton more in benefits for all these people. you can argue until you are blue in the face that we spend too much money on defense and our army, but when world war 3 starts you're not going to be saying a god damn thing about how we spent too much, you will hop on a band wagon and change your tune completely. just because you are short sighted in what is really important to keeping this country together doesn't mean we are or i am.
