When i read it right, the rig will be mostly used for research compute, so undervolting for lower hash isnt an option.

I would go for watercooling. Have got a bunch of rigs with it. They are my best. Lowest power, highest hash.

I would split those GPU's into a few rigs. In my experience, 6 GPU+ rigs are a nightmare to maintain, unsuspecting bugs happen all the time.
I have three 13 GPU rigs with 7 NVIDIA and 6 AMD cards per rig. I also have two more cards in workstations. Works great at the moment with the latest Claymore. I got the cards down to about 100 watts or less each (two are a bit over that) and getting a total over 1.3 GH/s.

The only tricky thing is to stop Windows from pushing updates causing disruptions. I have tried various methods but it appears to be persistent. What works best is to set the network connection as metered.

Here in Germany there is a limit of around 3300-3500 Watt you can use before the protection comes in.
How do you plan to power 19 x 2080ti?

Realistic is the max of 12 GPUs, maybe 13.

The B250 Mining Expert has got 3 connectors for 3 Power adapters, and you will need all 3.

Get a good 1151 CPU like 7700 / 7700k

Risers as mentioned, with pci-e.

You can have two PSUs plug into one circuit and another two in a second circuit. One of my rigs has 13 GPUs in it. I have 7 Nvidia cards connected to a UPS that can handle 865 watts which is plugged into a 15 amp circuit. In the adjacent room there is another 15 amp circuit. The outlet is close enough where I can run a very good quality surge protector to a second UPS that can also handle 865 watts. 6 AMD cards are connected to two PSUs plugged into the second UPS.

One circuit does not have a ground wire. The other one does.

I bought a device from Zero Surge that can surge protect equipment plugged into an ungrounded 15A outlet.

First of all, ASUS B250 Mining Expert MOB doesn't support 19 normal GPUs. You need a mix of AMD and Nvidia cards to get all 19 GPUs to work together.
Ex. 13 AMD RX 580 and 6 Nvidia P106-100.
I'm not sure about the limit of Nvidia cards that you can plug but it might be 12 or 13 GPUs.
So, in practice, the board will only support 12/13 RTX 2080ti.

1. You can but I won't recommend it at all. For this, you can either get an Add2PSU or ATX 24 Pin dual cable.


2. As you are using RTX 2080ti, I'll recommend 6-pin PCIe Risers. I cannot stress this enough but do not use SATA cable to power riser.


3. You simply cannot use a Celeron processor as it doesn't have as much raw power to handle this kind of configuration.
So, it must be i5 or i7 and minimum 8GB of RAM.
Also, do not use Windows, go with any Linux distros you feel comfortable with or mining oriented Linux distros like Simplemining, HiveOS, etc.

1. Yes, you can, but you have to link the ground lines of all PSU's.
2. Any riser can do the job.
3. Search in google or youtube for 19 gpu mining rig.

A colleague of mine is looking to build a 19 GPU 2080ti rig for research compute purposes, and possibly mining GPU crypto when idle.

I do not have any experience building rigs using riser cables, nor powering such a beast, and was hoping someone might have any suggestions on the best way of pulling this off.

1) Can I power the GPU's using the "shorted pin" method used for ASIC mining, using 1500W PSU's, separate from powering the motherboard ?
2) Which risers would be needed to safely communicate with each GPU ?
3) Has anyone done this already ? Any pointers ? Links ?
