I have two hobby rigs and use m.2 sata drives. They work better than my old sandisk external ssd and obviosuly no cables to worry about. I went for sata because i didnt want any conflict between the pcie lanes to gpus.

I tend to stick to 6 GPUs per rig but there are a few things for you to consoder.

- you can add another gpu with an adapter to a pci-e m.2 slot
- m.2 drives don’t require a power cable
- depending on what is on sale, one is cheaper than the other
- if you do a 2.5 inch sata drive you have to mount it somewhere

absolutely correct whoismoses the list the you give i consider. but i don't have plan to add another gpu with pci-e m2 slot another videocard.

i need consider the 3 on the list.

NVMe M.2 is much faster than a SATA SSD.  But who needs that extra transfer rate for mining?  I can't see how it would be of any real benefit.

I think between onboard M.2 and external SSD have the same performance including durability, especially for durability also the brand of SSD can be influencing.

I suggest using external SSD because if you want to put another GPU, you can use it (M.2)

Also got curious about M.2 vs SSD as storage devices, particularly with mining rigs as a use case.

It seems that while a 250GB M.2 SSD is more expensive ($200+ range) compared to the standard 2.5" SSD ($50-70) and they don't differ much in anything else except size. The only thing m.2 has going for it is the small form factor. Speeds aren't as fast, and as i've been reading from articles online, power consumption is better on normal SSDs.

For me I'm just confuse about space. I'm planning to purchase a 120GB and i think it's enough to have a mining rig.

Hi Everyone,

I'm just new here and also in crypto mining and starting to building a RIG however i would like to know if what is much better to build for storage.

1. Onboard M.2 SSD
2. External SSD Drive

because i want to less the space of my mining RIG and so confuse if what is much better for durability and long 24/7 use.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110-D3A

Thanks in advance.

Although H110 and not supports M.2 PCI-e and only M.2 SATA I recommend external SSD. Its size is also small in comparison with the PSU or video card.
