They are the same plates used to mount the fans.  You will need to acquire a couple of #6-32 bolts (1/4-inch) and some washers to attach the tab to the PSU.

Since the BitFurys seem to be able to run just fine without any/much cooling, I've decided to simplify the case a bit:





Fans can still be attached to the bottom extrusions or to the top support beam (via an optional set of fan tabs and fasteners).

Note that the PSU is now fastened to the tray (via two stainless steel "fan tabs").

These changes will reduce the cost of the case somewhat and allow me to build them faster.   Grin

Thoughts?

The case is pre-drilled for all of the mounting holes on the current and forthcoming versions of the m-board.  The different widths of the boards is handled by the ability to re-position the two support beams.

The design is exceptional! Well done. I'm interested in an enclosed rack mountable unit. I think an enclosed unit in a  data center environment is preferred because it channels the air front to back. That is, from the cool in flow side of the rack to the hot outflow side. I'm not an engineer (IANAE???) but that's my thinking.

Might just be me, but those tall spacers seem to make it look a bit, erm, wobbly?  I can't tell by looking at it from this angle, did you say there are mounting brackets at the top to hold the H-boards in place?

No chance of any wobbling, because the standoffs (actually spacers) will be fastened to the case via a long bolt up through the entire extrusion.

The top edge of one side of the h-boards will be held in place via pairs of spacers:

The tall spacer (25mm) was actually selected to allow plenty of room for the Pi to be mounted underneath the m-board.  It was then a natural progression to adjust the design ever so slightly to allow the Pi to be plugged directly into the m-board.

Yes, I have all of the dimensions that I need.
Yes, this will mount a standard ATX PSU, fastened to the frame.
No fans, but the case will include 12 fan mounting "tabs" and all of the required fasteners.

Awesome! Someone else has said that the cards aren't very stable especially blowing air through them, so either screwing them in or tight nylon spacers are a must.

Stacking would be cool, though for me it's not a huge deal as I'll only have two at the most. Not sure how much it'd add to cost, but I'm sure there are a few people who have stacking as a top priority.

Where does the pi mount?

This open air "case" will be made from 15mm t-slot extrusions and will include a small plate onto which the Raspberry Pi will be mounted.  That plate could then be mounted almost anywhere on the extrusions.

I had a somewhat hard time making a reply, as a newbie there are real challenges to be over come first to have this privilege.  So there maybe a number of folks that got the device, and really want to have a case figured out before the units ship - but are unable to express their interest.

Anything is possible.  The width of the design, above, could be reduced by either placing the PSU behind the boards or by switching to a smaller/server PSU.

What would a beta tester get? Free or cheaper case to test and make a review and change requests if necessary?

I have unpopulated testboards at hand for testing my own housing design so i could do that, but iam located in Europe..

Thanks.  Approx. weight is 1.6kg (3.4 pounds). 

The stainless steel tabs and extrusions are very heavy (unlike every other PC case) so I wouldn't expect much (if any) vibrations. 

The two rails supporting the main board will be able to be re-positioned so one could mount deeper fans on one side.

I'm in New Hampshire, USA.

Hi,

Nice to see other housing alternatives and definatly a good low budget version.

But depending on if you deliver assambled or not and if transport is included the price seems a bit high in my opinion.

I think total production costs for this should be around 50 -60 USD.

I calculated on base of following parts:
4,5m of 15x15 aluminium profiles  - 30-40
1x small sheet metal                  -  5
4x stand offs for the case          -   5
and assambly material               -   10

But i could of course be wrong i just made some rough calculations on that, but if iam right the mark up seems pretty high.

I'm starting this thread to determine whether there is enough interest for an open-air case for Bitfury's ASICs.

This case for ASICs is a simple variation of the trays I already produce for GPU mining (made from 15mm t-slot extrusions).  For example:



The mainboard would be mounted on tall spacers (tall enough where the Raspberry Pi could be mounted anywhere underneath it).  Otherwise, the Pi could be mounted almost everywhere else on the t-slot extrusions (a small piece of aluminum sheeting would be included) .











Estimated price (for just the case, no fans, etc.) would be $110USD.  Current prices are $125 (flat packed) and $150 (fully assembled).
