Google really offers too many tools, most of them are paid or require registration, that's annoying. I personally love Filetypeadvisor as this software can open everything and provide with very detailed info on each file. It also recommends how to open it and even to convert to other format if needed.

Unlike with the Keystore file on Ethereum, you cannot open the wallet.dat file in an online-service because it is thought for the use only with Bitcoin Core. Furthermore, your wallet might be not encrypted with a password which gives everyone access to the private keys of your Bitcoin.

Never open a wallet.dat with anything that isn't the native client for said wallet.dat file.

So for example if your wallet.dat is a Bitcoin wallet, then open it with Bitcoin Core or whatever client that generated that file.

If the wallet.dat is Litecoin's wallet.dat, use Litecoin Core... etc

Never attempt to open it with a text editor, online or anything else.
