You can end the contortions. The county backed off this nonsense and rescinded the exemption. There was no way this was going to work out as intended, whether the intent was to protect the feewings of allegedly racist white business owners, or to protect people of color against profiling, or to make county bureaucrats feel better about themselves.

A mask mandate exemption for people of color meant to address racial profiling concerns has been removed after racist backlash, Oregon county officials said in a statement.

Using George Floyd as an excuse, a cohort of black students enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) recently demanded that one of their professors postpone their examinations as a show of “solidarity” with “people of color.” When they were told no, however, they proceeded to politically lynch said professor by calling for his immediate firing.

While unsuccessful, this angry mob of entitled malcontents did succeed in getting Professor Gordon Klein placed on temporary leave as a form of punishment for his refusal to give black students special treatment. More than 20,000 people are said to have signed a petition calling for Klein’s firing, even though he did nothing wrong.

In response to his black students’ demands, Klein quoted civil rights champion Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in stating:

“Remember that MLK famously said that people should not be evaluated based on the ‘color of their skin.’ Do you think that your request would run afoul of MLK’s admonition?”

This response was meant to get Klein’s black students to rethink their request in light of the colorblind position of Dr. King, who if he were alive today would be utterly ashamed of racist movements like Black Lives Matter. Instead, these black students lashed out in anger against Klein and called for him to be “canceled” from UCLA for the “crime” of upsetting them.

Keep in mind that Klein has been teaching at UCLA for 39 years, and has no record of inappropriate behavior. His only “scarlet letter,” so to speak, is refusing to put black people on a pedestal at the expense of white and other non-black people. In other words, he embraces equality – and for this, he has to go, according to the left.

Yeah I totally get it and its true.  White people who don't want to wear masks would call reverse racism and hold resentment against POC who don't wear masks.  People think talking about race is racist therefore anything you would do to try and protect people from racism is racist itself.  That attitude is why the US has never been able to reconcile its racist past.

Wearing a mask is not to protect you from the virus, its to protect everyone else from you being able to spread the virus.  The important thing to know here is that this county is overwhelmingly white so you achieve the goal of most of the population wearing a mask.  If there is one POC in a store and they are the only one without a mask, no one can get them sick because they all have masks on.  The only situation where this could be a problem is if a bunch of POC congregated in one business all without masks which is not something that this county has.

Also, in a POC businesses, POC can wear their masks and wouldn't have to worry as much about being mistaken as a robber, shot, or having police called on them because of their color.  The risk is only elevated when POC enter white spaces with their face covered.

The Board of Commissioners wrote that “the county received several calls from leadership from our communities of color asking us to revise the policy — it was not providing them protection, but instead making them possible targets for more hate.

Blacks need to outsmart them by wearing masks voluntarily.

People who deny racism are going to love this one.  The reality in the US is that a black or latinx cannot walk into a business with their face covered without being looked at suspiciously.  Its more of a danger to POC than COVID.  This is also in a county that has so few POC that there won't likely be a lot of them together so as long as all the white people wear masks, there won't be many places for the virus to go.

An Oregon county has decided to make people of color exempt from its mandatory mask policy, citing the potential for racial profiling. The decision comes as multiple counties in Oregon have ramped up face-covering requirements to slow the spread of coronavirus.


Lincoln County's general directive requires everyone to wear a face-covering in any indoor public setting, or any outdoor setting where six feet of social distancing can't be maintained. But the county wrote on its website that "People of color who have heightened concerns about racial profiling and harassment due to wearing face coverings in public" are exempt from the rule.
