Depends on what you mean by useful. So far, LTC is the only coin I've been able to spend on goods and services. I like the idea behind Primecoin, but it needs to be spendable to be useful to me.

Will primecoin be the first semi useful coin? The proof concept there for cal. primes. Will next be Curecoins or other? Any other useful coins in the horizon?

You can look at Litecoin.
I don't think he means useful as "can be used at some shops". More like useful, because mining is used for other good sideeffects like in Primecoin.
Guess we will not see many of those any time soon though, because mining has some requirements for the problems to solve, you cannot just use it as raw computing power.
