It'd be very hard to patent aspects of bitcoin, because as soon as you get it, a large group of individuals will continue ignoring it.
Are there any patents being submitted by individuals, corporations or foundations that will support the growth of a particular coin? i.e. Is it possible that a coins foundation could secure (or license) a patent giving it a unfair advantage over the others? I hope not, but this could get greedily messy soon
