being in a country where they broadcast the very early seasons of pawn stars only now (fun fact: on a sports channel  Grin), it's interesting to see how rick&co and their shop have changed in the last years  Cheesy

just curious:
- how many shots did it take to record these 3mins?
- was the script dictated or was it a "free speech"?
- does Rick really know the stuff by heart or was it like "tomorrow we record an episode with a cas-coin, so inform yourself in advance"?
- what was your calculation to come up with your asking price? (besides error coin)

So the filming took like 45 minutes. Had to answer the same questions like 5 different times, same with the intro and outro. Also they made me come up with a joke for the end hence the "Bit too much coin" haha

The conversation was pretty free, although they cut out pretty much everything I said which is kinda lame.

Re Rick, they have a research team that deep dives each item so pretty sure he just reads the notes before the show then references stuff during the conversation. He mentioned the "call a spade a spade" and some other historical stuff so it was pretty well researched, wish they included the narrative about it being easier to explain Bitcoin with a physical coin rather than going the security route but oh well. He didn't really have any context on the difference in sale prices for these coins depending on rarity and grade, wish they had called in an expert! haha That being said he is pretty familiar with crypto as a whole, fairly certain he's been keeping up with things independently of the show.

Asking price for me was based on ~10x face value. Hard to really come up with a price. Not that many of the series 2 silver halves (45) and not that many yellow slabbed. Don't even want to talk about how much BTC I paid for it back in ~2015 so wasn't motivated to sell anywhere near spot.

Pretty neat.  But be honest did you want to punch Rick right in the face when he offered you crypto and silver face value lol.  Did you talk with Rick about it off camera.  I know these are all scripted but generally wondering if he had any idea about these to begin with.  Probably not, physical crypto is still niche and in its infancy.  Either way a good watch always good to see physicals getting their due time in the spotlight!

Nah, kinda expected a low ball offer, I mean it's a pawn shop. Didn't expect him to give zero premium for rarity though! We didn't talk at all off camera. Been watching the show for quite some time so was a cool experience, and always good to get a spotlight on these amazing coins regardless of the offer  Grin

Yeah without a proper no coiner market for these yet I'd expect the same.  These need to find their way to proper auction houses and then they will get their proper showing.  Especially with Cas coins getting peeled all the time rarity will become a real thing.  Just imagine if we run up to 100k how many Cas will be sacrificed.  One day they will get their due...one day.  Thanks for sharing

No pics of you and the Pawn Star team?

I would imagine there would be something written into the contract of anyone appearing on the program that guaranteed "the show" would have first pick to provide content to networks and the wider media.  Even "behind the scenes" photographs might be construed as being the "property" of the producers over the owner/provider of the camera.

Pretty awesome. This is going to probably be the first real mainstream showing of our beloved collectibles. I imagine there might be a couple coin collectors out there that see it and decide they must have it. Glad you didn’t sell. Hope you laughed at the offer. I was a fan of the show once upon a time and hope I find myself viewing this episode at some point.

Thank you! Hopefully I represented the community well. Really interested in how it gets cut together since some things I phrased well and some I could have done better but overall I think it will be a huge net positive. I've yet to meet someone who is into crypto who didn't immediately want a Cas coin as soon as they found out about them. I didn't even counter offer when he offered spot, just too far apart for it to work.

Definitely keep us updated. I probably won’t see it otherwise. I don’t watch cable anymore but I’d like to think you’ll be featured in some commercials for the episode as well. Surely with crypto being so hot right now they will use your goods to promote their episode. Would be great to see some clips and promo pics added to this thread when they become available.

If I know anything about Pawn Stars then they will surely promote their episode with whoever is the bloke with a big gun that week Roll Eyes

Wow - awesome! I’ve been waiting and hoping for a cas to turn up on the show.
Well done mate  Smiley
Any idea when you and your coin will appear ? Let us know when the episode is due  Smiley
Were they generally interested in crypto ?
You may well be brought in at a later date as a “buddy of mine “ to validate future crypto collectibles  Smiley

Thank you! No idea when/if it will air. Likely spring but there's always the chance they don't use the footage. I think it went well/is quite relevant so fairly confident it will make the cut, but I'll def update if I get confirmation either way. Rick seemed to know a bit about crypto, but not very much about Cas coins, would love to get called in on the next one to add more info  Grin he told me to get my yellow slab ANACS regraded because there are better grading companies and that he saw coins like mine going for just over spot etc. (please DM me if you see any s2 silver 0.5's selling for anywhere close to spot! haha)

Very cool! Cant wait to see it.

Sooooo... what are we asking for the coin?  Wink

Probably going to hold onto it for the time being! Realized after coming up with a price for the show and thinking about selling it that I would miss it a lot tbh.  Cry

This is fn awesome! I used to be a huge fan of this show.  I'm curious about a few things, what did you guys talk about exactly, do you know how to properly say Casascius, did you guys talk about other physical bitcoins at all? Are you allowed to discuss what was discussed or did you have to sign something saying you wouldn't discuss it in detail until the show comes out?  Great job !

Yeah, can't go into too much of the behind the scenes but I think it was a pretty good conversation about the history of the coins. Didn't go into other physicals specifically. Only thing I didn't love is he positioned it as a cold storage coin made for security, which it technically is but like Krogoth posted above, it was originally made as an educational device to help take an abstract concept and make it something tangible that could be more easily discussed. He actually brought up the "call a spade a spade" and the origin of the saying so that was pretty cool! And yes, I definitely know how to pronounce it correctly haha  Grin

I'm curious about how you were invited onto the show, specifically were you told anything about how many of the items that are offered for sale are actually walk ins?  Or, are they more like yourself where choice items are sourced then appear on the show as sellers genuinely wanting to do a deal?

Can't go into that unfortunately.

Just finished shooting an episode of Pawn Stars for my Casascius coin (S2 0.5 silver "error") after being invited on the show. Rick offered me face value and I obviously declined. Hopefully helps get a bit more notoriety around these fantastic collectibles! Should air sometime spring 2022.  Grin

Very cool!
Got a pic of the coin you used?
Did they get in contact with Mike to validate authenticity?

I wish they were able to get in touch with Mike! Was secretly hoping he got brought in as an expert, would have fan-boyed hard haha

Pic of the coin: https://ibb.co/bmmmbnS

Wonder if somehow the first bits get some air time, otherwise I don't know how that would be authenticated, other than eodguy selling it direct on here.  Is there a date and time that was given that this will air.

Yeah not sure, no promises of it ever getting aired or if it does what will make the cut so we'll have to wait and see! They did take quite a few close ups so will likely show the first bits if it airs  Grin

Face value is not a bad offer from a pawn shop, I think they always aim to make around 50% plus on each deal.

If i needed quick cash i would probably feel safe enough a well known shop is holding it and i can get it back when repaying the loan and interest.
I would only sell for face value if really in needed that sort of cash and quickly.

The pawn shop would be taking a big risk giving face value on a loan. If they gave $30k and the BTC price took a big dive, the owner may never pick it up.

Face value is a terrible offer and think you are missing the point.  That's like saying I'll give you $10 for that Picasso with the $10 bill attached to the back.  Face value plus $zero for the collectable is  Undecided
Face value IS a terrible offer - but every item gets a TERRIBLE offer from a pawn shop!
The name of the game is to make a profit and he KNEW he was gonna make a profit!
Plenty of positives here  Smiley
I presume he knew he could flip it for 10-20% within a few days or sit on it and make 20% +
It’s all good gravy and a massive positive for all cas holders  Smiley
It proves these guys are more than aware of bitcoin and it can only be a positive  Smiley

Good question....but I presume when they handled it they probably explained how to find the btc value on it or, or perhaps they were flipping it front and back. Maybe OP can answer that

I'm curious about a few things do you know how to properly say Casascius,

I’m Mike Caldwell, the producer of the Casascius physical bitcoin in Salt Lake City, Utah. I have been an enthusiast of the Bitcoin peer-to-peer cryptocurrency by Satoshi Nakamoto since I first encountered it in December 2010. I have always felt that a monetary solution based on cryptography was possible and useful, and that it was only a matter of time until somebody put it together and did it right.

Casascius Coins were created as an educational pursuit to help regular people understand a peer-to-peer virtual currency. I created them with the belief that very few would be able to conceptualize the value of a bitcoin if they couldn’t hold it in their hand or put it in their pocket in the form of a tangible non-electronic object.

Casascius is a name I made up before ever deciding I would use it for a coin project. The root, “CASAS”, is a simple acronym for the phrase “call a spade a spade”, to which I added an ending I thought would make it sound like a personified Shakespearean or Roman sort of name. It is properly pronounced “ka-SAY-shuss”, though I am not bothered by the variations I hear.

https://casascius.wordpress.com/about/

Gracias, but I know how to say it, was just wondering if it was pronounced correctly in the show  Smiley

Thanks so much for the support everyone  Grin

Congrats! Face value tho, pfft indeed!  Cheesy

I enjoy that show for all the random pieces of information and humor. Having a Bitcoin collectible on the show was bound to happen at some point!
Though, what I really think is awesome is that  the first seller of a Bitcoin physical coin on Pawn Stars started this thread.
Just goes to show that Bitcointalk is still a place for premieres in crypto!

TBH, was imagining contacting them for years to suggest something similar, but Vegas is pretty far for me ATM Cheesy

Yeah I've been a fan of the show for years. Was definitely a cool experience but didn't even bother negotiating when he lowballed that hard haha. And only makes sense for things to return to this forum, it was such an invaluable source of information and a fantastic community when I was first getting into crypto. I for sure owe a ton of people here a debt of gratitude.

That's awesome, congrats did you mention this site during the shoot?

I did but they made me re-answer the question not saying it so I doubt it makes the cut. Cry You'll know who I'm talking about when I say "Well known cryptocurrency forum" haha

Awesome.  Only a matter of time before we get our time on the main stage!  I hope you gave him the pfft look when he offered you face. Should have told him you got an alitin or cryptographic he can have for face  Grin.

Fantastic job! Crypto collectables are still unknown to many people, I'm really curious to know how it will evolve in the coming 20 years.

Grin
