LTC and BTC are very different mining ways. LTC go with powered risers, for BTC I would recommend them also, but not as needed as when mining with LTC.
Are you mining BTC or LTC? If BTC you probably wouldnt need them, unless the cards you have do not have PCIE power connectors themselves. If you are mining LTC, I would say absolutely you need powered risers.
I am by no means an expert, but I would err on the side of caution and get powered risers. This way it is less stress on your motherboard and its guaranteed to work.
Yes. GPU never complained it had access to more power.
thanks 00sas00 and everyone else. I am currently running 2 cards on the mobo and 1 on an unpowered riser and it works great. I think i am going to be cautions though and convert all of my unpower risers to powered before I put on my 4th card. (i'm pretty sure this is unnecessary since I can triple sli with no issue but best to be safe) I have to wait 2 days anyway for newegg b/c my psu didn't come with the pci cable to power a 4th card :/

as far as i know, you don't need powered pcie risers, if your mobo has additional molex connection points to provide extra power to the pcie lanes.
i'm not sure exactly how your mobo's power rail is set up, but i'd say the mobo was designed to run sli/crossfire and the 2 molex connectors are to power 2 cards in that configuration.
so you could probably get away with 2 powered risers and 2 unpowered risers.
you'll need powered risers for the cards you're going to be connecting to the non 16x lanes.

I have an asus maximus iv motherboard that has 2 molex connections that give extra power to my motherboard in addition to the atx connector and 8 pin mobo connector. I want to use 4 cards on pcie extenders. My question is since these I have the 2 molex connectors feeding into the 16x and 8x lanes do I need powered risers? I know if I didn't have the extra connectors it would be mandatory but never found an answer.
