Be careful! The extender idea works great, but I bought some extenders on ebay from China and the soldering was shitty - they shorted out lines and killed two card. I cut most of the useless lines off with a hacksaw and it now works great (with two dead cards on my table)
So it seems like we both know that powered and unpowered extenders exist and most likely where to get them. If we were to buy an unpowered adapter like what you guys linked, would this work for a somewhat recent pcie x16 card? Pcie x16 cards can draw up to 75w from the slot plus whatever they draw from the molex connectors, pcie x1 can draw up to 25w. Powered risers are much more expensive than unpowered risers. Are powered risers still needed if the gpu has molex connectors?

I am fairly me to the game and have a few small gpu rigs running.
I am only making use of the x16 slots.
I have done a bit of searching around the forum and have seen I can make use of the x1 slots by risers
I just have a few questions regarding this.
In case it varies by cards the cards will be 5870's or 5830's in the x1 slots
1) do all motherboards allow gpus in the x1 slots?
2) If I get x1 -> x16 risers and power via the 6pin atx plugs I should not need a molex model should I. ?
3) I have seen people just using x1 -> x1 risers for a x16 cards with a mention of cutting the socket, is there any benefit to this? Also is there a page which shows which part to cut
