Well, they work fine for me, but you r right. Cost is really an issue
At their price you can easily set up a mobo, cheap CPU and a single cookie of RAM.

Advantage of having two systems: cheap and easy to build
Disadvantage : double maintenance work, so there is

Yes they exist but they're year from price efficient from what I've seen often costing as much as another rig.

hmm very interesting idea. maybe someone can be a guinea pig and try this. where would you be finding these pci-e splitters? the only place i saw that has these is here, which i bet will cost a buttload:

i have 3x6950 and (soon) 1x5830/50/70 to add.

currently all cards have ben risen with (duh) riser cables and are suspended over the motherboard in the usual fashion (ie some strange construction, selfmade).

i was thinking, now:

If I get two PCIEx16 to PCIEx1 splitters and plug them in, use riser cables to connect 4 cards to each of them and suspend them somehow so that I can get them cooled, I could - if I use one or two additional PSUs just to power the cards - potentially run up to 8 cards on my rig, right?

I would "just" need four more cards and two PSUs that I exclusively use to power the cards. No additional rig, motherboard etc etc. Only one remoteadminthingamabob and no more whatsits.
