"profitable" exchanges. Not sure what you mean. But IMO you should first establish waht you want to do exactly:

- Buy BTC and hold to profit for the BTC rise itself - I like Coinbase (3% fees on credit card buys)

- Trading BTC and the hifhest volume and well establish alts ( if there is such thing): Poloniex (beware the suport problems and prolonged withdrawal time) and bitfinex. In these exchanges you can do margin trading lending ( you lend against a good colateral for a fee that is determined by the market from a minimum of 2 days.)

- Trading BTC to smaller and less established alts, where you can do some research on cheaper coins that COULD give higher profits - Cryptopia

- Trading BTC to very new after ico alts and tokens (but low volume ) - Liqui.io.

Try gunbot. It costs ~0.1 btc to buy it and if you can have good ammounts on it, you'll be on profit for sure.

There is nothing like a profitable exchange. Whatever profit you make, if at all, depends on your trading skills. You can start with coinbase if you don't mind their fees, or look for an exchange with lower transaction fees. Good luck!
