Hi,

You should consider 570s, they are the best for mining eth. They can be found for $200 - $250 and can be modded to 30 MH/s.

So I was going to purchase the rx580 system but when i went to order they were all sold out in the mean time argh...

so for better or worse i am switching it up,what i went with is:

6-ASUS ROG strix 1070ti advanced (3150 USD)
prime z270-A motherboard             (140 USD)
EVGA G2 1300w PSU                      (245 USD)
HyperX RAM 4GB DDR4 2133mhz     (40 USD)
kingston 120 SSD                           (55 USD)
6x usb riser                                    (45 USD)
stackable rig frame with 5 fans         (150USD)
21" monitor  and keyboard               (75 USD)
i3 7100                                          (100 USD)
I realize the i3 is a little bit much, i may re-use it down the road on another project

All in for $4000

Still need a bit of advice for the operating system. I understand i could save quite a bit running linux but to be honest I am uncomfortable to go that route as it is foreign to me.
If i stick with windows should i be getting the 64bit home or 64 bit pro version. it looks like $99 for home and $175 for the pro version?

Setup 2

MSI Z270SLI motherboard         $155
MSI GTX 1070Ti gaming 8gb       $500x6= 3000
everything else the same

Setup 2,
But can you find any better Brands other than MSI? In terms of longevity, those doesn't pass (or I am just unlucky).
Keep away from those RX580, you will be needing more than fans to cool them.

Thanks for all the suggestion!!. I am from Canada and converting back to usd prices so some of our hardware is a little higher than down south.

I just realized I could also go with  1080ti for $700 usd. Instead of 6 1070 I could purchase 3 or 4 1080ti for now,be a little more future proof, and get the 1800w Evga Psu and that would leave me with room to expand to 3 more cards.

I'm in Canada too, bought my rig components mainly from newegg and the GPU's from BestBuy, CanadaComputers sometimes have decent deals

Blockchain Evangelist.
I would go with your setup 1, but I suggest some modifications as following:

1. Asus Prime  motherboard z-270-A $155

For 6 GPUs, no need this expensive MB, choose GIGABYTE GA-H110-D3A or Biostar TB250-BTC Ver. 6.x, both are around 100-105$

2. Windows 10 USB $110 + Sandisk 128GB SSD $65

If you dont use SSD to install the wallet, so just buy a 32Gb USB to install Linux (cost around 35$)

3. Frame (fans necessary?)  $200

I dont understand the idea why we have to pay that much for a frame (maybe you mean a 4U rack mount rig).
If that's open frame, make it simple, it costs just about 30$.

CPU celeron G3930                       $75
Where are you from ? This new processor is worth no more than 50$
As a beginner I recommend to buy any old computer on a flea market for $ 50, with 4 PCI-e ports it is very easy to find (M2N-e with ddr2, for example), and the savings can be spent on video cards.

First of help, thanks for all the discussion on the boards it is very insightful and helpful. I have been lurking around for a while and I am getting the itch to build a rig. I have been trading bitcoin and various alts for little while now and am not sure if I have what it takes to keep trading, nor do i want to tie up money in alts as longs. I have been doing exceptionally well however with the way crypto swings this could change instantly. My thoughts on a gpu rig is that I would still be in the game with the gpus as a hedge, no its not the same get rich quick but if you own the hardware it is irrelevant what the coin price does (to a point).

On to the rig, I have selected two different gpu systems. Both 6 card.I initially want to mine but not limited to monero.(also interested in eth and others of course) I am leaning towards rx580 as they are $310 usd each compared to 1070ti at $525 usd as well better at cryptonight. Vega 56 and 64 are unavailable for the near future and start at $600 usd each if they were in stock. There is also the possibility of waiting for volta but who knows if it will be worth the wait.

With cost and longevity/return in mind what would you go with.
