Currently have a list of the following:

XLM
BAY
XMR
ETH
STRAT
STEEM
WINGS
XEM
KMD
MAID
ETC
EDG
GNT
LUN
PIVX
VTC
RLC
ARK
GCR
TRST

Please give me your honest critique. What you think is the best hold, worst hold, long term play vs short term play, etc.

This is such a huge list dude. It is very hard to follow and check all of them. I advise you to follow / invest maximum 6-7 coins so you can control your investment during raises / dumps etc and make daily plans.

I understand OP's rationale. Cryptos arent like well established stocks - who's to know which one of these coins will explode in the future. There's no telling. Diversifying broadly gives him a better chance to hit on a couple

How would you guys decide which positions to close/which to pour more money into. I'd be sick to my stomach if I sold a particular crypto only to have it explode in the future

How much of each do you hold?  It's not just about your holdings but how much you allocate in each one?  That matters because the movement of each will differ from the rest.  So you have to keep moving funds around from cryptocurrency to another to reach an ideal balance.  Something that makes your earn keep being positive.

But if you're asking which ones are good and bad then it's hard to say.  Especially with the state of the market now because even a shitcoin can give you profit.
I think you have too many varieties, you don't have the energy to take care of every breed, so I think you should control the quantity.

Hello pr0dy,

A few comments

Portfolio construction: I think the number of currencies is fine, professional hedge fund managers have stock portfolios of 25 to 40 names. I would bet more heavily on more established names like NEM and ETH.

Flyers/Risk plays: I also share GNT and MAID in my portfolio with you.

New allocations: Of these names I would allocate extra funds to Steem, NEM, ETC, ETH, XLM on selloffs/retracements.

Critique: Many are fairly new tested currencies, why not consider currencies with longer histories?

You have too many of them, you can't follow them with due attention and have no good idea what is happening with them. I call this gambling.

Recommendation: make the list shorter.

Yup.  Way shorter.  Sell most of the crap and make your portfolio leaner.  The scenario of the market in crypto changes a lot in a short amount of time.  The currencies that's good now doesn't necessarily means it will be better next year.  Most of that 'gold' turn to shit quickly.  Especially now with the rise of more than a handful ICO's that have been supported and backed with millions making their burn longer than the other projects.  Next year expect them to be the ones in the top 20 at CMC.

If you need some sort of guide to get started, I have threads that could help.  But keep in mind it's all the POV of an observer, not an expert.

wow if you are holding those coins better to set up your target earnings and let the coins behind don't think of anything
just trust your instinct and get your profits after, I'm very positive that you did your research before placing your entry
inside trading you just need patience and even long wait is needed just keep calm and earn a lot.
What does this mean? Hold long term (get your profits after) or sell after you hit your target?

Where do you hold them?    Is tuff question for like 1/4 i have no ideas what they are. Then there is like half doing nothing. Its value is rising right now not because people believe they will be useful one day in future, but just because others buys them so they also want to have some and not be left without. Tongue

Only eth feels like one of the top competitor and it is a sure yes for a long time holding. Can even consider trust as their marketing through signature campaign was good. Rest all coins are surely listed on yobit and you should just wait for a one time pump and sell it don't cry when the price is dumped as most of these are pumped once in 3 months.

I would exclude some coins from the list:

STEEM
BAY

why not BAY?

Steem has been raising steadily, from 18k to 50k in the past months.
And BAY has been on an upward trend lately with strong development and community.
Hold on to both.

Out of all of these I think ARK has a big potential to rise, as it's new and it's devs are pretty active and accurate to their roadmap. If you've bought it during the ICO you already have a X6 profit. In which coin have you invested most or do you spread the investments evenly?

the first criticism i can give you is that there are a lot of them!
maybe it is just be but i like to diversify but i would always keep it to a limited number of items. in this case altcoins. that way i can keep a close eye on my investment. and besides most of the times only a handful of altcoins go up and also i can always join in if i see a rise.

from your list i already have the following:
PIVX, ETC, LTC and i had almost all the rest at some point but dumped them.
