Its about the right of every person to be able to chose what should be done with the data they produced.
But forum posts aren't mere data; they're publications. Authors have neither the right nor (usually) the ability to un-publish their work against the will of their readers.

If anything, it's the exact opposite. Corporations love to keep their users hostage of their services forever for datamining purposes, so they can sell all of your information even after you deleted the account the typical way, they kept the data.

It was not until people got together into creating a group to force corporations into getting their shit together and starting completely deleting the requested data. This is was has put people like Zuckerberg in problem. So the right to be forgotten is a creation of pissed off users, not corporations.

It's naive to think anything that ever hits the internet will ever be forgotten.

It may sound naïve at first glance. Every beginning is difficult.

But who does not fight has long since lost.

EDIT:
it might get off topic.
For privacy reasons, blockchains are hell.
Thats why I like privacy focused coins. E.g. blackbytes  Wink

In many countries you don't have that right. It's naive to think anything that ever hits the internet will ever be forgotten.
Many phishing sites clone Bitcointalk, and even if you delete something here, those sites keep their copy.

This is called the "Right to be forgotten". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_to_be_forgotten
And the forum should have this "feature".
I know you opened a thread about it yesterday, but why should any forum should follow foreign laws? Any country can make up anything.

This is theymos' answer:

I intend to ignore all stupidity coming out of the EUSSR.

What I wrote about corporations is valid for countries too. In my opinion this is not about following the rules / laws of a country or the European Union. Its about the right of every person to be able to chose what should be done with the data they produced.

And yes I created the topic in Meta. Because after i read this topic here I thought that this should be discussed.

I think that Bitcoin is about personal freedom. And a forum about bitcoin could or should be "part of this movement". Things should turn for the better. And part of it is the recovery of power over your own data.

About "Right to be forgotten" - I do not think being a forum inspired by bitcoin really need this corporation created rules. We are ok with our own choice as a community. Bitcoin should not follow corporation.

No one knows vlom's identity, no one know pugman's identity so why care  Tongue

This right has nothing to do with corporation created rules. I think this everything but that. Its a right for individuals that have a change against all the corporations. And i really would appreciate to have an option to delete everything connected to me here.

But I think this is almost impossible. E.g. because of quotes.

There should be a button that you press and your account and all posts get wiped.
You are talking to a person who's mistake was to leave his identity open. They took the chance and used it so badly that his family who had nothing to do with this forum was insulted by those members - just because he did something in the past which some of the members did not like it at all. The person is me, by the way. Don't you think I would like that feature more than anyone!

Sometimes I wish to leave the forum, sometimes I wish to resign from this account and create an alt to start over then again I find there are some members who really respect this account and show their loves. It's not that easy to leave a community when you get involved too much.

However this may be used by scammers to leave when they get caught, but nowadays with the internet archive taking snapshots and people quickly using archive.is to collect anything dodgy, it wouldn't really be that useful for scammers, but a normal person that just wants to leave could probably benefit from it.
This point is valid.

right to be forgotten is a bad thing
I never said it bad by the way. My emphasis was that theymos will not bother to delete an account at all, although it's only one click away for him. Technically few clicks...
- Go to the members page
- Search the member using the username
- Select the member
- Hit the delete button
- Confirm the delete account

Everything get's wiped out, I guess?

And the forum should have this "feature".
They did, in the initial years. It was removed later on for reasons.
Default SMF has a delete account feature. And I am sure bitcoinTalk has also. The reason of my suggestion was OP to lock his/her account is because I highly doubt any admin will care to hit the delete button form him.

I don't see how the right to be forgotten is a bad thing no matter where the idea came from. Wouldn't you like to disappear from social media if you started using it as a young kid posting embarrassing stuff and then later on you grow up and realize social media is stupid and you are better off being under the radar?

I support that the people running these services must give their clients a way to resign and disappear completely from your servers. Forums should be no different. There should be a button that you press and your account and all posts get wiped. No one else will care about the account anymore  Smiley

OP cares.
maybe OP wants that all the data that was collected during signup and afterwards by using the forum is deleted.
and this is a legitimate request.

Not possible. Just leave your account. Delete all your posts, change your password to something you can't remember and problem solved.
Or simply lock the account.

Change the email address to something: [email protected]
A notification with the link to lock the account will be sent to the previous email account.
Use the lock link and lock the account.

Edit. One post you can delete tho is this post that you started. Just remove the texts and move it to archival.
Even if your account gets deleted, your name in the forum will remain as the thread starter of the topics you posted such as this.

Is there a reason you want to delete your account, 11 posts and a merit point  Smiley and some account with more with no point, I think if you don't want to use it for now just leave it like already suggested and someday you might find the need for it again.  Wink

Why? Can’t you just delete all your posts and leave the account? (You only got 10 posts)

Unless theymos manually delete your account (99% he won’t), the maximum a mod can do is nuke your account, which result will be the same as deleting your posts yourself.
