If you want an ASIC in a timely fashion buy one from an AISCMiner "Block Erupter" auction. The ASICs are real, perform as advertised, and get shipped on time. They're not cheap however, and it is not guaranteed if you'll ever make your money back at the prices they go for.

BFL's history is simple. They over promise and under deliver at every step. They constantly lie about shipping dates and specs while channeling resources into advertising to continuously generate funds for pre-ordered products that they also cannot deliver in a timely fashion. They're in blatant violation of FTC prompt delivery regulations and ignoring FCC regulations regarding emissions and their CEO is a convicted thief that should not be trusted with bus fare. Most of the whopping 35 5Gh units they've finally shipped after months of lies about shipping dates have been sent to media, devs, and early paypal customers that eBay has been(rightly) hassling BFL about failing to deliver.

Do not order from them, you'll be lucky to break even if you receive anything at all. If you still insist on ordering from them order their 5Gh model as it's the only one they've even demonstrated to have functional at all nearly a year after beginning to collect pre-order money for their SC line. Even this product bears little resemblance to the product originally pre-ordered in June of 2012. The price has nearly doubled and the power consumption has increased 5 fold.

This man speaks the truth. Nice post!

Hey guys,  could someone please explain the history and current status of BFL,  I want to get caught up on those events and I got here late. Could you also explain what it might be like if I ordered one of their products, they look so tempting!
Thanks so much I love you guys!

I think once BTC is jammed full of ASICS that folks will still be able to push Jalapenos over to other SHA alt coins.

My understanding, as a newcomer to Bitcoin and to mining, and as someone with an order for a Little Single SC that I hope to see delivered some day:

BFL produced and shipped some decent FPGA-based mining hardware in the past. They are making the transition to ASIC hardware and have had a bitch of a time getting things right. ASIC engineering is really hard, even when you're used to designing and manufacturing electronics at a higher level (printed circuit boards, etc.) It took a long time to get the ASIC design right and it uses a lot more power than they thought it would. Their problems stem not from their engineering so much as their management of expectations. They were way too optimistic about their timeline and now some people are beyond pissed because they pre-ordered last summer and have yet to receive their promised hardware. But the ASIC design is done, the first Jalapenos have shipped, the redesigned cases and power supplies for the Singles and Little Singles are almost done, and it looks like there's finally a light at the end of the tunnel. A lot of people will accuse BFL of being scammers, but I don't personally believe that to be the case. They've produced ASIC hardware and gotten it into the hands of third parties for testing. Yes, it took a lot longer than expected, but I have no reason to think I won't eventually get my Little Single.

BFL have actually delivered a few ASICs now. Not many i'll admit, but at least we know that the jalapeno does exsit. If i were you i wouldn't order anything less than a single as by the time it gets to you the dificulty will be much higher and your return will be much lower

Basically you can read on their page about "super power; super low energy cost" devices you won't probably ever see Smiley BFL is in "shipping in two weeks" status since last summer if i am not mistaken - so far noone really recieved his devices. BFL has raised an incredible wealth during preorder and almost every two weeks they bring us a new informative message e.g. "we encountered unexpected problems, but we will surely send our products during next two weeks".

On the other hand they delivered some FPGA in the past, but it was imo more than year ago. So they might not be scammers, but real hardware developers thats started bigger project than they can effectively handle.

If i can get you an advice - don't buy anything from them. Even if they deliver products eventually, you have much better ways to invest your bitcoins untill that time (be sure majority of preorders won't be delivered until end of years - if any will be delivered at all)
