Makes one wonder if it will ever be possible to pay a $5 coffee with bitcoin, if it takes hours to get confirmed.

Unless one pays a hefty % premium for transaction fees to speed it through.

I'm not sure that a $0.07 fee on a $5 coffee would be considered "a hefty % premium".

That being said, a merchant isn't going to wait for confirmations to sell you a $5 coffee.  If they are willing to accept bitcoin for the purchase, then they'll either be willing to accept it with 0 confirmations, or they'll have a third-party service that will handle the risk.

You are here ---------> but you're not all there.
Thanks that's comforting to know.  I had the same question after waiting
about an hour for the first confirmation on a transaction.
As an added bonus my coins came in while I was reading this thread!

Thank You sgtspike,

i was thinking thats what it ment. But now its been 2hrs and nothing has changed so, freaked me out some

How much are the payments? there only like 0.005 btc correct?

@kgo Thank you for the info, very informative
Sometimes payments never go through, but it is rare, and if you are using any sort of default client to send the money, you shouldn't run into that problem - it'll automatically add a fee if a transaction is so low of priority that it will take a long time to go through.

That said, it is extremely odd that $300 worth of BTC hasn't made it into the blockchain within a couple of hours.  Care to link to the address you are looking at?

Dude im sorry but i have no idea what the means,

Call me stupid, a noob w/e i just dont know what that means. First time i ever had this happen.

So no im not kidding.

I am guessing, something happened with the original transaction, and now its just sitting?

How long does it take to get info another block?

A score is calculated to determine how 'important' your transaction is.  More coins are more important.  Older coins are more important.  Paying the transaction fee makes them more important.  Then the highest scoring TXs get batched up and included in the next block.  If that block fills up, the lower scoring transactions stick around and need to go in a later block.

In this case one transaction probably had a lower score for some reason, and takes a while to get the first transaction.

Not sure what you're doing, but eventually that transaction will hit the right threshold and go through.  So you'll have paid twice.  Since I don't know the details, I'm not sure if you can get someone to send one payment back.

Unconfirmed just means that it hasn't been written to stone in the blockchain yet.  It'll get there eventually.  You haven't lost anything if you see an unconfirmed transaction at blockchain.info - it just means that it hasn't been processed yet (effectively).
