Dogecoin started as a clone of Litecoin (with some trivial changes). Litecoin itself is a clone of Bitcoin (with some changes). Apparently the people making the Dogecoin software cut out the middleman (Litecoin) and are now using the Bitcoin code as a basis for their software.

Dogecoin 1.7.0 Alpha 1

langerhans langerhans released this 8 hours ago · 181 commits to master-1.6 since this release

Dogecoin Core 1.7 Alpha
Dogecoin Core 1.7 is a complete re-architecture of Dogecoin, changing from
using the Litecoin client as its base, to Bitcoin 0.9. It's still Dogecoin,
same Scrypt PoW algorithm, same reward schedule, but there's a lot of
changes under the hood.

For the full Bitcoin 0.9 changelog, please see https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/bitcoin-090-final-is-available-changelog-download-522014

Please note that this is a very early release, and a full audit of the code
is still in progress. The client has been hard-coded to only work with testnet
for now, to avoid risks of damaging real wallets.

Downgrading

First and foremost, please note that downgrading from 1.7 to 1.6 is not trivial.
1.7 now uses Berkeley DB 5.1 as its default database (in place of 4.Cool, and as
such may create database files which are incompatible with previous versions.

Rebranding to Dogecoin Core

Following in the footsteps of Bitcoin (Core), the Dogecoin reference client
has been rebranded as "Dogecoin Core". This helps separate its identity
from Dogecoin (the network).

dogecoin-cli

Where previously commands were sent to dogecoind by running
"dogecoind ", 1.7 adopts the model from Bitcoin Core 0.9 where there is
a separate "dogecoin-cli" executable which us used instead. This avoids the risk
of accidentally trying to start two daemons at the same time, for example.

Transaction malleability-related fixes

Fixes for risk-cases involving transaction malleability have been added; this
is particularly important for any merchants or exchanges using the built-in
wallet system.

Hi guys,

I know that this isn't specifically Bitcoin related, but you guys are the experts so I'm turning to you to explain things.

The Dogecoin wallet is going to get upgraded again, but it's not going to be a fork  Huh

Instead, this is what they said:

Code is now based on Bitcoin source. But parameters are still the same as before. No fork this time

Downgrading from 1.7 to 1.6 with a fresh wallet is not easy. Be aware of that.
Qt client is now Dogecoin Core, added dogecoin-cli to talk to dogecoind.

Transaction malleability-related fixes

Testnet only for this version. It won't touch your current wallet, safe to be run in parallel. To get TestDoges see faucet below.

What the heck does this all mean?

Here's the Reddit thread:

I don't know what it means but my guess is that they are starting to realize that: if you can't beat them, copy them  Grin
