1. Underclock the memory and overclock the gpu on your 5830's. The gpu should do ~900MHz without increasing voltage, which will yield a power consumption of about 160W and hash rate about 280Mhash/sec, per card.

Running 1005/300mhz on my Sapphire 5830 and getting 310Mhash/s with phoenix + poclbm + SDK 2.1 - running stable at 65c and stock voltage.

MSI 790FX-GD70 - $120
AMD Sempron 140 - $35
2x1GB DDR3 - $FREE
4x HD 5830 - $450
Corsair AX850 850W - $170
$775
+5% tax = $813.75

Let's say $850, some items have to be shipped.

@ 245 Mhash/s per card, that is 980 Mhash/s

1.15 Mhash/W
1.15 Mhash/$

Also electricity is 7.15 c/kwh, so 24/7 30 days per month @ 850W = $43.76/mo

2. undervolt and underclock your cpu. It should work normally at <1.5GHz and 1V. If you're gonna use linux or windows with the 2.1 sdk, the cpu will idle most of the time anyway, so it should use <10W.
3. if you use linux, 1GB of memory should be enough. That can save you another 5-10W.
4. again, if using linux, you can skip the hard drive and run it from a usb stick, saving another 10w
5. corsair's AX series is a bit overkill for this rig. A TX850W will do just as well and the few % efficiency difference doesn't justify the price difference. The TX costs about $50 less and the lower efficiency will cost you maybe like $2 per month.

I'd like to know where you got 4 x HD 5830 for $450? are they used?

Also, the power req is really a bit lower than that. if I use 160w for each card and 80W for the system (sempron 140 is 45W) then that is 720W @ 88% eff = 818W

Anyone got some real numbers on the 5830 power draw, under mining usage and not the usage from gaming

I'm buying the same rig Cheesy But with corsair CMPSU 950W. And btw, 5% tax? wow.

yeah that's a good one too.

Going off local sales so I might get the OCZ ZX 1000W too @ 185 after MIR, but of course that's a 1 shot deal.

i'm building 3 of these

you doing your power calculation wrong a psu has to take AC and convert it to dc for you pc and your ps is about waste about 10% of the power it takes in so at full load that psu will pull about 1kw now 850.

other then that looks good but you can get more then 230Mhs out of the cards btw

I know that the PSU is not 100% efficient, but the AX850 is about 88% efficient. Also at stock, the total system will draw only an estimated 740W, at 88% efficiency that is ~841W

So, I was rounding (just like I did with some of the prices. And I took the most conservative Mhash/s value from the wiki for the 5830.
