Cops do know martial arts, I think it's part of their training to know the basics of self defense. They need it so they won't just defend their authority with their guns. A police officer who don't know how to protect himself without any use of weapon can not really be considered as a good cop.

No why would it. They probably are already taught self defense but are cowards so will go straight for their guns because they just cant wait to use them. Shoot first ask questions later.

Self defence through martial arts isn't very helpful if the suspect is armed.  Smiley

Cops are being taught martial arts, because that is all they will have after the American people take their guns away. Click the picture.

I feel like I should correct you on your OP, all martial arts styles when taught correctly are military grade, the problem is there's such a wide variety of shitty teaching going on out there is that some martial arts are lucky enough to have a lot of skilled people learning it compared to others. Just because you've seen people doing kung fu or ju jitsu in a totally shit way doesn't mean that the whole style is crap, unless of course they've made it up or put their own spin on it.

Anyway, teaching it can make a difference but one of the big problems with these police officers seem to be discipline, they clearly aren't put through any stressful situations very much ( I mean look at how some of them are overweight for fucks sake ) so when the real thing comes along they don't know how to react.

In comparison, see the kind of training spetsnaz go through.

Yes they have been taught selfdefense but only basic. And the reason they pull they're gun is because it's they're protocol then shoot if the suspect tried to charged with the intent of hurting them. That's why they are being called coward.
But teaching them hand to hand combat martial art will improve their skill apprehending the suspect without shooting.
Plus it will improve their discipline. I know miantaining it will be hard but it will lower the accident killings.

Me myself is not huge fan of cops. But I feel bad about the other cops being discredited because of the accident killings because they lack of hand to hand combat.(I'm not saying every cop lacks in hand to hand combat.)

Yeah, that looks to be the disturbing picture being painted by each new incident that comes to light, including the most recent one where a man with his hands up in the air (surrendering) is senselessly murdered in plain daylight. But the problem is not with most police officers, the problem is that when their coworkers investigate, prosecute and sentence them, they are not properly held accountable. There are few murderous bastards in the police force, but those that are... they're very comfortable killing when presented the slightest opportunity. Same goes with other wrongdoing and corruption.

Anyways, I dont think teaching them any martial arts makes any difference. That's because (I have heard) that the standards for the police are too low. They are in good shape when joining the force, but they're not running drills to keep in shape. They're given military surplus, but are not given military rules of engagement (which I think would be a great improvement over how they behave right now). They can be taught the deadliest martial arts, but they're not going to be expected to practice it, they're not going to be expected to hone or maintain their skills. That's what it boils down to. After a year or two, for most cops, it won't make a difference.

Does teaching cops martial arts makes any difference?

Teaching them military grade martial arts(FMA,Krav maga,Silat) will make them more effective on raids and close fight combat. Even on emergency fights without them holding a gun.
