I wish that instead of just speculating on this matter, that we could all take a proactive role in it. For example, I VOTE for mtgox to just cease trading, return all funds to customers, and shut down and then we can focus all of our energies into building newer solvent and trustworthy exchange systems.

"Gox burns slowly" - don't think so. It will be like an explosion, with alot of blood and tears.
MtGOX has hurt their reputation in a very bad way.
I think their efforts will fail and MtGOX will be either forced to close shop or atleast become a minor exchange.
Maybe they will start a new exchange under a different name to get rid of this bad reputation.
