Yes I do notice them and most of the time if the coin is pumping, probably to prevent their site to crash or something because this had happened last year with Ripple if anyone could remember. Most especially with Poloniex too.
Lol i just remembered about it when you said that. When ripple was went crazy, poloniex down and after that they closed ripple's deposit and withdrawal.
It was happened too with bittrex when siacoin got pumped, then people did arbitrage from poloniex to bittrec
Most likely this would be the reason where the exchange got too overloaded when they do saw up big price gaps with other exchange when theres a sudden pump where arbitrage betting can really be blocked or postponed due you cant really make any deposits into that one. Ive been expecting this anytime where they do make such closure into these kind of events but it if you would able to get through then instant profits would really be attain.

As I said, their exchange, their rules...just don't take us for retards and put "wallet problems, maintenance" as reason for closing withdrawals Smiley

I noticed that these two exchanges (maybe other do it, too, I have no user elsewhere except bitstamp)
often have some wallets "under maintenance", meaning you can's send coins from those wallets.

Fishy part is that they usually do it for coins that have lot higher price on another exchanges

(for example, steem dollar and vcash atm at poloniex)

Anyone else noticed the same?
this is a very basic thing but nobody is paying attention to detial. and maybe they do not want to think about it because it's too complicated. what people think is how to make a lot of profit.

And what better way to profit than arbitration? At moments price on Binance was two times or more bigger than on Poloniex

Not surprising yet i have noticed this stuff after all the years spending on doing trading. If you do see opportunities to make arbritage you will really experience this hardship because one of them would have the reason to have a wallet maintenance which will really purely stop traders to make arbitrage on that situation.I dont know why they do it,some people might not able to notice it but if you are a type of trader which focuses on arbitrage will have that kind of motives. If you do get in then you are lucky yet this is really an easy profits for you.

Surprise surprise, BCN wallet "maintenance"

https://poloniex.com/exchange#btc_bcn

Its their business and their exchange, I just find it hypocritical to pretend wallet is experiencing problems and drawing fire and rage
toward coin/wallet developers

Poloniex having too much issues recently which is not a good sign for a reputed exchange like that so it is better to withdraw all your funds from Poloniex wallet by small small parts because many users are also accusing that whenever withdrawing huge amounts they freezing the accounts,Yes it may gonna be an scam exchange soon so act fast to save your funds!

They do it again...moment SBD price on Bittrex jumped way above poloniex one, they got "wallet problems" on Poloniex...

Anyone want to bet problems will disappear once price becomes about same?

I think when there will be no arbitrage opportunity anymore then wallets will not be in maintenance anymore. I have observe this one happening numerous times not just in Bittrex and Poloniex but in other exchanges as well. When you see a low price on one exchange and high in one, do not just immediately buy the coin but check first the exchange that you are going to sell it because there is a probability that its wallet will be on maintenance. Besides, doing an arbitrage like this is not ideal because there is a probability that the price will already be taken before the coin reach the exchange and if you decide to sell it, you will end up at a loss instead because of the fees.

Could definitely be market manipulation activity. It's not only poloniex and bittrex either because yobit does it as well on a huge scale. I've seen a lot of times where certain coins fluctuate but end up in "maintenance".

But honestly there is nothing you can do about it, because we have no proof of they're actually intentionally doing this.

However, this just means that you should always keep your coins off exchanges. Whether a wallet is in maintenance or not is completely up to them and you don't ever want that to be the case. You could be wanting to sell at a rate that you particularly fancy but end up not able to sell at the actual free market rate because a certain wallet is disabled for the moment.

I have heard of this before here on the forum. We have to remember that
we are operating in a decentralised world with crypto.

I have actually seen it with SIA also last year. There are rumours that the
exchanges are falsifying prices so they can in theory put any wallet into
maintenance mode to prevent the flight of a lot of tokens to a rival site.

That might be a problem if the trading also becomes disabled. I haven't had the experience of a wallet under maintenance AND having trading disabled as of yet. Not sure about Poloniex as I can't recall, but I certainly remember having a wallet under maintenance for Bittrex but still being able to trade my coin. In fact, what I did was just sell it for Bitcoin and I was able to cash that out. If I'm not mistaken, Gridcoin has been under maintenance forever, but you can still sell/buy it there.

I had problem before with Sia coin too, 400-500 sat price on Polo, 700-800 on Bittrex...but at that time
sending BTC anywhere was also expensive...still, funny that problems usually occur when theres
price difference

Guess they'll always make it tough for people to do this "arbitrage" trading across exchanges. I'm not sure that's entirely the case though, as I've seen enough USDT arbitrage around some exchanges, and Tether is hardly ever down for maintenance. Going to need to collect more "evidence" of such claims if they want to stand. Not that it's really going to improve the situation if it IS true. Whales gotta do their things, I guess. Us small fish gotta complain and still use these shitty exchanges.

i am not sure , because i never noticed about it.
but i remember last one. when i see aeon got a pump , they(bittrex) stop deposit and withdrawal
because maintence about new release.
i see on aeon twitter also say like that.
but on hitbtc we can still deposit and withdrawal.
and i never think that just market tactic, probaly hitbtc too late to update new release.
in my opinion.
