I'd like to start some mining too, but there seems to be lots of stumbling blocks involved...
like, I've seen some applications, but also read some of them are definite things to avoid.
Anyone have a recommendation on which app(s) to use that would be useful for the widest range of coins?
Also - any good pools in Canada? Staying local would be nice.

As long as the pool is reputed and the payout structure makes sense, you shouldn't worry about that.

After a few Google searches, I found a lot of good reviews about Nanopool and issues about dwarfpool.

The thing I can't figure out is since I've started, it continues to take 4-5 days to mine .2 ETH even though I've added 50 Mh/s (3 Gpus) to my rigs. 1 rig running 4 rx 580s on Ethos and another 2 1070s on windows for a total of 170Mh/s...
