POW exists to secure the blockchain, it doesn't need any other "actual" use.

But the actual use needs the PoW. And thats kinda the point I am trying to make.

The main issue with any of these is that the problem has to be broken up to solve it. Primecoin works well as it was not necessary there.

I guess presumably the title should be 'POW with actual use?'

how about something to do with quantum mechanics? Trying to model anything in that area must need a lot of computing power.

Consider it done! Title changed.

I like the quantum mechanics idea. Would quite possible end up exposing the coin to its own destruction though.

Thanks for the replies so far! This is also meant as a discussion topic. Which things could be calculated by a network?

I know about prime and folding coin. What I am wondering, is if you could give different tasks to the network.

Task: Enter 100 million antibody data into network, find the one suitable for curing lungcancer.
Task: Calculate how a robot with these specifications is able to walk smoothly.

And a stationary when no  other tasks are available, it should search for prime numbers or something like that.

etc etc

I was beaten to the punch, lol

He is talking about things like:

Primecoin - searches for prime numbers
Folding coin? - calculates how to fold proteins

Distributed computing will make this more likely. Research the Jinn ternary processor, it is designed for this purpose. The core dev is Come-from-Beyond. It should make it easier to get access to large amounts of computing power.

original=Altcoin with actual use
edit--title have changed

dogecoin and litecoin, both are well known and people really using them
the rest exist just for trades and to scam people, ask yourself if people really use this coin in real life before decide to invest. get caught and you would cry, financially

Hey!

I was wondering if it would be possible to make a coin with which the network will calculate algorithms.
The coin would be in service of some kind of scientific foundation and give the network orders.

Orders might look like these type of things:
 - Calculate stability and movements of robots. Basically learn robots how to walk/move.
 - Explore which part of space might be interesting enough to watch with hubble.
 - Calculations that need super computers.
 - Simulations

You get the idea. Basically let the network function as a massive computer, which will do calculations and give coins in reward of your computing power.
