It creates community, interest about the ICO, followers, likers, etc.... Just a matter of marketing

I think for a lot of projects pre-sales are either not necessary or are too cheap and almost price out investors at the ICO stage. Those which are well managed they are useful as they can show there is an inherent interest as well as raising funds to aid in the ICO process.

That is correct, it allows you to move the project onto the second phase. Sometimes hire another DEV, pay for some real advertising etc. It also allows the folks that believed in the project early to get rewarded. They are also taking the most risk

Per sales are a way to raise funds and also to reward the very early adopters. They need funds for advertisement and to promote their ICO.

I'm interested in hearing everyone's opinion on pre-sales. Why do so many token sales choose to do them? Aren't they naturally a mechanism to allow whales to control the token supply?

Trying to understand the benefits from both the perspective of buyers and the people staging the ICO...
