If you use Coinbase Pro, then you can leave an open buy order, and then you can buy in a wick even when you are asleep. You wouldn't hve time to pick up some of them just by reacting to a message. Of course, you have to choose the correct price to take advantage of this.

Does anyone know if there’s a way set up notifications (from Coinbase) to phone if BTC drops below a certain price?

Just follow the links from the bottom of the page on the official website: https://wallet.coinbase.com/ 
You have to download the Coinbase app to get notification.
Follow the guide-
1. Open your coinbase app, click on notification logo (It's beside the text "Welcome to coinbase")
2. Click on the setting logo. (At right, beside the text "Notification")
3. Click on Custom Price Alerts
Now set the custom price range to get the price notification.
