Check to make sure your pool's URL, you username, and pass are correct in the .bat file. If it cannot connect to the pool, it will shut down immediately. Alternatively, you can add error handling to see where it is erroring out at.

what is the contents of your .bat?

Also, try putting pause at the end of your .bat file text.  This should make it to where it will pause before closing out of the command prompt and you should be able to read any error message.

Make sure the .bat is located inside of the directory with the cgminer.exe if you don't specify a path to it in your .bat as well.

this is happening with both cgminer and sgminer. I am trying to get up and running with mining litecoin but following everyones instructions in creating a bat file ,I can't find any which work. I double click on the edited bat file which contains all my saved setup information,account info,specs etc. and it runs for a fraction of a second and then terminates... is this a common error? has anyone else experienced the same thing and fixed it? I have no idea what is going wrong, I can't get a log file afaik so that I can't report an error.
i'm on windows 8 and using an r9 290 asus directcu.

edit, I solved the problem the other day but I can't seem to reply to this thread anymore. I fixed the above by following this tutorial;
