Topic: Problem with Privkey: Original Address Has Changed (Bitcoin QT) (Read 629 times)

I used "new wallet" in Electrum and I would like to transfer them to my new address (Electrum), transaction fee is 0.004849 BTC (10 dollars) "the fee for this transaction seems unusually high, proceed?".

Why?

You are not forced to pay a fee that high. If you enable manual fees, you can put in any amount. If you keep it in a range of 20-30b/satoshi it will be confirmed quickly.

Ok thank you

Yes...the original address is 1NGztBL4gna63pYgLBHJuhMCrV6YsqP3q9
and I want get its Bitcoin QT private key...

I'have found wallet.dat...now?

keep wallet.dat safe (make multiple copies)

download and run bitcoin core
then copy your old wallet.dat into the fresh bitcoin core

run bitcoin core.

dump privkey from bitcoin core.

open electrum
paste privkey into electrum

p.s dont let people PM you asking you to send them your old wallet .dat where they will send funds to your electrums new address for a fee
a few people like achow an lauda have done this in the past to scam people

its best to learn how to do things yourself so that if things go wrong in the future you can look after your own funds rather than trust third parties 'managing' your funds for a fee

Done, I have retrieved the privkey!!!
Now is better "sweep" or "new wallet with old privkey"?

Thank you all, for help!

The Bitcoin QT new address does not interest me...because now I use Electrum...

I thought you said the original Bitcoin QT address was this: 1NGztBL4gna63pYgLBHJuhMCrV6YsqP3q9 (0.076 BTC)
And you want get its Bitcoin QT private key to import it to electrum.

I can not find wallet.dat, I found walletdb.h, walletdb.cpp, wallet.h, wallet.cpp, walletmodel.cpp, walletmodel.h, wallet_tests.cpp
What is the folder?

It is where the Bitcoin QT blockchain files are located, not the executable. for Windows 7 or better
C:\Users\YourUserName\Appdata\Roaming\BitCoin

or you might search your hdd for wallet.dat or wallet.backup files
Though you had to do the backup manually inside Bitcoin QT in the past for wallet.backup to exist.

I am not an Electrum user, but the first question is about compatibility. I'm not sure Electrum will recognize the wallet.dat file. You may find it easier to install bitcoin CORE (QT is now called core) then send the coins to your Electrum address.
As far as the address changing I think you are misunderstanding something. There is still money at your address:
https://blockchain.info/address/1NGztBL4gna63pYgLBHJuhMCrV6YsqP3q9

This is a public key and your wallet can make many of them. I suspect that your "changed" address was just created when you ran electrum for the first time. It may have just ignored the QT wallet file and created a new wallet in it's own format.

Whatever you do DO NOT lose your "wallet.dat" file from QT. With that all can be fixed. Without it there is no hope. I would try installing CORE then spending to electrum.

Right, but instead of sending the coins from Bitcoin Core to Electrum (and pay a fee), you can export the private key from Bitcoin Core and then import it to Electrum directly.

And what should I do after recovering my old wallet.dat?

close Bitcoin QT
rename wallet.dat to not lose current wallet
copy wallet.backup (or the latest one like wallet.backup5) to wallet.dat
open Bitcoin QT and check whether you have 1NGztBL4gna63pYgLBHJuhMCrV6YsqP3q9

Hi, I have got a problem with Bitcoin QT.
The computer's motherboard has broken but the hard drive is intact.
On the new computer I opened a new wallet (Electrum) but I can not transfer my old Bitcoin (Bitcoin QT) to the new address (not knowing the old privkey...on Electrum the old balance figure as "watching only").

The problem is that I can not retrieve the privkey because the address of the old wallet (Bitcoin QT) has changed (maybe after the motherboard breaks with the following old hard disk recovery).

The original address was this: 1NGztBL4gna63pYgLBHJuhMCrV6YsqP3q9 (0.076 BTC)
Now it is: 193KHMcv1FKAuAwnsApa89ziC48TVf7BX7 (obviously balance = 0)

On console debug typing: dumpprivkey 1NGztBL4gna63pYgLBHJuhMCrV6YsqP3q9

I get this message:

Private key for address 1NGztBL4gna63pYgLBHJuhMCrV6YsqP3q9 is not known (code -4)

How can I get to retrieve the privkey?
I think the only way to restore the old address on Bitcoin QT ... or wrong?

Thanks for your help

So basically you are trying to import your old address from Qt to Electrum, right? What do you mean the address has changes from Qt wallet? And also, wrong board. Technical discussion is the right place for this question.

EDIT: One quick question: have you created a watch-only address in Electrum? You should create a new standard wallet afaik before trying to recover or sweep the privkeys from your qt wallet.

Sorry, I'm wrong section, if some admin wants to move the discussion...

Yes, the main address has changed from 1NGztBL4gna63pYgLBHJuhMCrV6YsqP3q9  to 193KHMcv1FKAuAwnsApa89ziC48TVf7BX7

I've created new standard wallet but I don't know old privkey because the main address has changed so i can not retrieve it from the bitcoin core console.

Try your wallet.dat backup if hard disk recovery messed up the wallet.dat file.
