I finally figured out the problem. I did not understand the Ubuntu Desktop and how it works. I found that the "File", "Wallet", "Tools" and "Help" menu is at the very top of the screen, and not included in the smaller window that Electrum is running in. I have been more used to the Window operating system, where these menu items appear within the smaller Electrum window.
The fact that these menu items do not show up at the top of the screen until you run the mouse up to them made it more difficult to figure out the problem.
I'm glad it turned out to be a misunderstanding of the Ubuntu system rather than a flaw in Electrum. Electrum works great, and I really like it!

I wonder how they will support it once both old algorithm and bip32.

Well that's very strange. I use Kubuntu, and I have all the menu items. Perhaps it's a bug related to Ubuntu's Unity desktop?

Anyway, to get the master public key, go to the console tab and type getmpk().

On my Ubuntu Linux Electrum GUI I do not have any of the menu items that I have in my Windows version.
There is NO "File", "Wallet", "Tools", or "Help" menus (like I have in Windows)
I only have the "History", "Send", "Receive", "Contacts", and "Console" tabs.
On the bottom of the GUI, there is a settings icon, but none of the options in there provide the Master Public Key.
Also, on the bottom of the GUI, there is a "Private Key" icon, where I can get the "Private Key" if I wanted it. But, nowhere do I have an option to get the "Master Public Key" or to "Import" or "Export" a transaction.

You don't have a "Master Public Key" item in the "Wallet" menu?

I have successfully run Electrum version 1.9.7 on Windows with two computers: 1 that never connects to the internet, and one that runs a "Watch Only" wallet that connects to the internet. I really likes the way it works to maintain a "cold" wallet on the offline pc.
I have been trying to install another (different) wallet on two different PC's 1 Windows and 1 Ubuntu linux version 13.1.0
The intent is to never connect the Ubuntu linux machine to the internet, and maintain a "cold" wallet on it, then with  a "Watch only" wallet on the Windows machine.
I installed Electrum version 1.9.8 to the Ubuntu machine offline.
My problem is I cannot obtain a "Master Public Key" from the electrum on the Ubuntu machine. There is no option anywhere in the program GUI to export the "Master Public Key".
Also there is no option anywhere in the program GUI to import an unsigned transaction to sign it.

I figure my problem may be one of three things:
1) Version 1.9.8 doesn't include these options.
2) The Linux version 1.9.8 doesn't include these options.
3) Perhaps there is something wrong with my installation of version 1.9.8 on Ubuntu

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
