I think a central bitcoin magazine/fleshed out community site is needed. I plan to put one up if someone doesn't beat me to it. If someone would like to parnet for this then since I am probably doing most of the work/hosting the site I would want you to pay for the domain/advertising impressions/assist where you can.

You mean like Bitcoin Magazine? http://bitcoinmagazine.com/
Similar but not exactly.

I have thought of something similar.

A site where several people can offer up trading with price and icons for the different ways that they will accept cash (wire, bank deposit, ing p2p, dwolla, etc).

It could provide tools and APIs for both seller and buyer to help them more easily trade on their own.

And of course, allow for ratings and statistics on each person's trades to help people get a better feel for who is the most trustworthy.

Though with FinCEN saying that any currency conversion requires a license, it could severely limit any US people doing trades.
http://bitcoin-otc.com/ ?

Ya, I guess that is a haphazard way of doing it.

I was also thinking it would be great to be able to search for an item on only Bitcoin accepting online stores. Sort of like google products but for Bitcoin.

I do not like paying for things with fiat. But I cannot search every bitcoin store to check to see if they have the product I need first.

I am behind the idea, so what ever you think will work do it. Also what language are you going to build it?

I love Java, but I could do C++ if people think it's a better idea, I am a student so anything that gets me learning will work. I have an insane amount of spare time to spend on things like this...

I have been interested in bitcoin for years now. I have recently decided that I wanted to work on a bitcoin-related project. Unfortunately, I have no ideas to start with. I don't know if this belongs here, but I was thinking that a brainstorm thread was a good idea. Maybe it will push other people in starting new projects.

I'll start:
This(https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/sierrachart-bridge-realtime-bitcoin-charts-v05-mtgox-intersango-6019)  gave me the idea of developping a desktop bitcoin trading applicaiton. It would be open source, multi-platform, and include tools to trade on mtgox and other services using only the applicaiton. It would also display graphs and so on...
