I would love to bump up to a second ad (2.5 BTC needed right now) to force his ad costs up.  If he bids it up I will match up to a number I have in mind, and then drop out, so that the money can be recycled for next week.

But is the linked thread really a great starting point for newbies? If someone is new to 'the scene', and has just seen one of BFL's ads, then I don't think the thread you linked really does a great job explaining anything. The thread is explaining things that make sense to people who already understand the entire story around the product, but might not really be helpful to someone who doesn't know anything.

If someone came up to me and said "I am going to purchase this product from BFL, what do you think". I would say (these are all facts; no emotion or judgements)

1. They have not yet assembled any prototype for what they are selling you. There is not yet a single test unit. What they do have is a design and some of the electronic components.

2. They do not employ any of their own ASIC engineering staff or have their own lab*. They employed a part time electronic engineer.

3. One of their executives has a previous felony conviction for fraud.

4. The product was promised 7 months ago (covered by the ad tag line I guess)

That's it, total truth and plain facts. That is what I would tell someone to catch them up on the situation.

* I could be wrong about this one; someone fill me in.

On the page i linked to i spoke about sentiment and how it carries over > brands , people, companys , communitys.

Its something that rubbed me the wrong way during the short time ive been here! People are near riot level in their heads regarding BFL and every page is plastered with BFL ads.. From a community stand point the shadow reflection it leaves everywhere is bothersome to say the least.

Its not till youre here a bit that you suddenly see the veins pulsing as people get animated during discussion about BFL and you realize  .. Wait a minute here! There is a rampant sentiment and its breeding..

Its the reason people are throwing tomatoes the minute they hear new asic miner company... Its self propelling and  leads to rage and trolling and a general feeling of untrustworthy..  -->> This gradually gravitates to other threads and leeches on to other subjects and before you know it you have a community of scammers just taking advantage of one another !!! From the fpga/asic miner companys down to payment processors and even people hosting asics for groups ..

Sometimes as in my case pointing a finger and stacking blame doesnt really help at all.. Im just out some loot and missed my chance of getting a miner from a company i want to support! <----! I didnt get scammed so to speak but my experience has been rough to say the least. I wouldnt wish it anyone not even the trolls..

In traditional media the media company would run Josh's ad over yours even if you outbid him since the future income from Josh far outweighs the future income from this campaign. It'll be interesting to see if the threat of BFL advertisement boycott of bitcointalk outweighs the set rules of the ad auction. (Also interesting to see if BFL sees this as a long term threat or a minor inconvenience. They will boycott if it is a threat and ignore it if they think it is an inconvenience).

I think not even having a working prototype is more indicative of how risky this is, 'failed to deliver' is true but a not as immediately appararent. IMHO

How about we start adding this text in our own signatures?

Create a thread here with facts about the past few months with BFL.   Reserve the first 2-3 posts for updates as they come. Be fair, they did deliver FPGAs right?

Link the add to the thread to gain potential awareness.

I think you should make the background or the font lighter.
The black on dark red is kindof hard to read and doesn't catch attention easily.
 

White background and red font will stand out.

Warning: Butterfly Labs are running an elaborate scam. Don't get sucked into it.

Then change the text to say BFL outright. They still own the rights to their name and could kill the ad or threaten legal action. I almost went with "3 LETTER ACRONYM ASIC COMPANY..."

Just please don't use that other horrific colored background gradient.

Too generic.  ASICminer is paying dividends and doing what they said they would do.  Avalon has delivered to the tune of 1/2 of the total network hashrate.  Helveticacoin isn't asking for prepay and will be very interesting when they hit the market. 

BFL is the only company advertising what they can't demonstrate.

Truth: To date, no one has received their BFL ASIC hardware. The current rate of reward for the BitCoin system was halved in November/December of 2012. This means that your BitCoin reward has since been halved.

To date, only customers of competing products have been able to reap the rewards of ASIC implementations. BFL has long been delayed as the last competitor in the field without a working ASIC implementation.

Truth: After the reward block was reduced by 50%, many BitCoin miners have found that the difficulty in producing blocks has only increased. Ads can't be deceptive like this.

Before anyone suggests it: For legal reasons and to avoid too much drama, you can't make assertions of fact that are potentially damaging and possibly false. For example, you can't say, "BFL is a scam," or, "BFL will never deliver." You can say, "BFL is probably a scam," or, "BFL is unlikely to deliver." OP's text is acceptable.

We could link to an image that has all the details burned in. So a website wouldn't be necessary.

Or you could create a BitcoinTalk thread in the off-topic section and that way you could allow other members to give them a good straight talk after the initial reality shock treatment. (heh)

I suggest you build a eye catching text that [supposedly] leads people to a great deal for BFL hardware and then hit them with a well concieved post or image that will tell them the truth. What they are about to purchase has had nothing but heartache for customers. The CS agent is an asshole (king of the assholes) and they never deliver on time.

The first hit should be breaking the myths of the "get rich quick scheme" followed by real *disappointed* customer quotes.

A BFL customer would have to be extremely retarded to go ahead with the purchase. I would recommend keeping in mind there are two kinds of customers.

!) The ones with high expectation. (so burst their bubble with actual reality)

!) The newbies who assume they will make a ton of cash but don't know anything about who BFL is, what they do and don't do, and what they can actually expect.

God knows the BFL forum is now a major repellent to any newbie who thinks of purchasing or does purchase and changes their mind after reading all the crap that goes on.

I have purchased on slot in next weeks ad round for an ad warning newbs about BFL.  I am looking for suggestions on content, and formatting.

My first thought is the following text:
