Why can't you just send the bitcoins from your blockchain wallet to your new wallet? That would be the easiest solution here.

Yes, it would be the easiest way to do it, but he should consider paying the transaction fee if he wants to send it to another address he owns. While importing the private keys or recovery phrase to another wallet are two different ways.

I remember doing this once. I wanted a specific address on my blockchain wallet (and the private key). What you will need is your 12-word recovery phrase. Using the BIP39 mnemonic code converter, you can then derive the private keys of all the addresses on your blockchain wallet. You can get that converter here https://github.com/iancoleman/bip39

After converting, the addresses and their corresponding private keys will appear under "Derived Addresses"

1. In Blockchain.info I have been provided with a 12-word recovery phase, is this bespoke to recovering bitcoin from Blockchain.info only or can this phrase be used to recover my Bitcoin via an alternate service in the case that Blockchain.info disappear?
Yes you can export your 12-word recovery phrase on any Bitcoin wallet that implements both BIP39 and BIP44 such as hardware wallets like trezor and ledger and this is also compatible with mycelium android wallet.
2. To pull my bitcoin out of blockchain I understand that I need the private key. Does anybody know how to extract it from this site? I have searched but just cannot find it.
blockchain.info only provides recovery phrase but you only need the recovery phrase provided by them to recover your Bitcoins to other wallet because your private key is encrypted to your recovery phrase.
3. Once I have the private key, is it possible to create both a paper and a hardware wallet or can you only choose one?
You can have both paper wallet and hardware wallet at the same time but what is the purpose if you already have one? they are just doing the same function, to hold your coins.
4. When you move coin from a web wallet to a paper/hardware wallet should you be paying commission for this move or is it free?
If you move your Bitcoins by exporting your recovery phrase or private key to other Bitcoin wallet you are not making a transaction to Bitcoin network so it is completely free but if you move your Bitcoins to another wallet address of course you will pay for transaction fees.

Thanks all for your quick replies and useful information, very much appreciated!

I think I will go for the Nano Ledger S hardware wallet and transfer my BC and Ether from Blockchain.

For those who store their BC on a hardware wallet, where do you recommend buying your BC as to ensure minimum fees when transferring out to the hardware wallet. What level of transfer fee would be considered acceptable so I know I'm not being ripped off?

Many thanks

When you are really concern of on the fees then you would really need have the time to search which do have the least fees. If you do as on where to buy bitcoins then if you do have local wallet provider then it would be a good choice less hassle for you compared on buying on some exchanges which wouldn't really fit on your options. Try out localbitcoin and search up what suits you best.

Hi,

I have purchased BC via Blockchain.info and now I want to pull my coin out in case the company are compromised or disappear. Ideally I want to place my bitcoin into a hardware or paper wallet but I have some questions first if anybody can shed some light please.

1. In Blockchain.info I have been provided with a 12-word recovery phase, is this bespoke to recovering bitcoin from Blockchain.info only or can this phrase be used to recover my Bitcoin via an alternate service in the case that Blockchain.info disappear?

2. To pull my bitcoin out of blockchain I understand that I need the private key. Does anybody know how to extract it from this site? I have searched but just cannot find it.

3. Once I have the private key, is it possible to create both a paper and a hardware wallet or can you only choose one?

4. When you move coin from a web wallet to a paper/hardware wallet should you be paying commission for this move or is it free?

Many thanks for any support

The process of exporting your private keys has been significantly made harder by blockchain.info recently. You used to be able to just hit the export button and export your unencrypted private keys in WIF format ready to go, but now you can't.

The recovery phrase will be able to be imported into wallets such as copay/electrum, any wallet that supports the 12 word mnemonics.

You shouldn't use the exported private keys as your paper wallet even though you could. Create a new wallet, or buy a new hardware wallet. Easiest thing to do is to just get your new wallet and transfer your funds over from blockchain.info. And yes, it'll result in a transaction fee as always.

You can use this 12-word seed to recover in any wallet(desktop/mobile/web) as long they are compatible in importing 12-word seed. Best choice is electrum desktop wallet.

2. To pull my bitcoin out of blockchain I understand that I need the private key. Does anybody know how to extract it from this site? I have searched but just cannot find it.
You have researched but you don't find it? better to search again, there are many tutorials out there, you only have to search the proper keyword on google. Anyway here's my tutorial about it here on my site.

3. Once I have the private key, is it possible to create both a paper and a hardware wallet or can you only choose one?
Most probably on the paper wallet but on hardware wallet don't think so, since every hardware wallet has its own format, numbers of words on its seed, and sometimes different format of its private keys.

4. When you move coin from a web wallet to a paper/hardware wallet should you be paying commission for this move or is it free?
Yes, its free only for paper wallet not on HW as what I said above, you can use this site for it https://www.bitaddress.org/ I assure you that it's safe there just download the whole site or get a clone on its Github repo and run it offline.
