Sorry for lots of questions, and then write what message there? My bitcointalk ID? I have sent my bitcoin address to that ID, considering the idea of prevention is better than cure Cheesy

What I wrote for prevention was that I control the address as well as the account and that I would use said address should I ever need to restore the account. As Welsh suggested store the PM ID in safe place.

Basically, when you sign it with that message theymos will be able to verify that you own the private key to that address. So, when signing the message you need to state you have lost your account, include the new email address that you want your account to have and date. It's always good practice to save the message ID, so go to your messages and click outbox, then it will have a summary of all the messages you have sent, in the format of Date/Subject/To. Find your message in this table and click on the subject of that message, look at your url and copy the msg ID.

Code: ( Msg ID example)
#msg1234567

Make sure to make a note of this locally where you can easily find it at a later date. I don't think this is required, just makes it easier for theymos to locate your message.

Do you mean we send our bitcoin address to that guy?
Yes, send a address that you are in  complete control of, if you can't access your account for what ever reason you sign the address and send that information to theymos.
Thanks, I think I am getting it, I send the address of one of my bitcoins to him and in case of being hacked, again send him that address and he/she helps me to recover my account.

Nope. I could send the address. You have to prove that you control it[1], by creating a signature with its corresponding private key. What wallet software are you using? I might be able to explain how to create such a signature.

I am using blockchain.info, can you please let me know more?

1. Log in your blockchain.info wallet
2. Go to "Receive Money"
3. Find the address you previously used in a post or a PM.
4. Click "Actions" and "Sign Message"

Im not sure if I get it. What do you mean by sign?

Sign as in: create a signature with the corresponding private key.

who is theymos?

one of the admins

is there a newb tutorial for this?

"this"?

Also, shouldn't it be easier to make it via email? Like, lets say your account gets hacked. The hacker right now could freely change your password and email direction. Why not make it need an email confirmation before applying changes? This way, the hacker would need both your account + email pass.

which happens... see the recent GMX desaster.

Right now email is pretty useless, this could automate the process of recovering a password instead of having to wait to manually get a guy named theymos to review your case. Most if not all forums require email confirmations to change sensitive data of the account, i never understood why this forum doesnt.

The current version of the forum is heavily modified, but since they are working on a new version there are no plans to make any significant changes like those you suggest to the existing software.

Is this used for recovering your account? If I put my address in the field can I keep it private and from public eyes?
It's not used for recovering accounts, it can be changed if a hacker has gained access to your account. Changing it will not be logged, the same goes for signatures. If you do decide to put a address there it will be visible to anyone who looks at your profile.

To take precautions for losing access to your account send your Bitcoin address to DefaultTrust then if your account was hacked or you can't access it you simply sign that address and send that information to theymos. Although, account recovery is low priority.

No and no. The best way to secure your account is to just have addresses associated with it in posts or like Welsh said PM one to default trust.
