At the end of the day, it all depends on several factors whether or not you will be able to recover anything. The data is either there, or it isn't.

It becomes increasingly more unlikely, if you have been using the hard drive since the files have been deleted, due to new data being overwritten. Recuva, is normally the program recommended due to it being free, and being successful in certain situations. It should be enough if there is any data there which is salvageable. If not you could contact someone who specializes in recovering data, and explain to them when you lost the data and whether you've used it since and they'll be able to tell you whether it's likely the data is recoverable.
