Hi all!

I'm playing with alt-coin mining at the moment, only with my CPU. I'm hoping to throw a few quid (not a huge amount) into a GPU rig in about a week, and figured I should get a handle on this. I am getting confused however, between clients, miners and startup params (for pools).

So, what I am doing (today, this will probably be different tomorrow) is mining 42coin with my CPU.

I started with Quark - mined about 40 or so solo, and I ONLY used the Qt client. I had to go to debug window to setgenerate true to run it, but it was working.

Then I decided to try some Bullcoins, just for a change, and this time with a pool. This time I had the Qt client, not mining itself, but Minerd. The transactions showed in the Qt client.

Now I've decided to try out 42 for a night or two. I have the Qt client for it. Do I need a miner as well? I thought Qt was the miner? I've it running at the moment anyhow. I can't figure out how to join a pool with this client, and the pools for 42coin seem to use Cdminer, which is different again.

See the confusion?

So. Here are my questions:

1) Is the function of the Qt client only to be a wallet and watch transactions?
2a) If so, can I use any seperate miner? Is there a difference between cdminer and minerd? Or are they actually the same thing?
2b) If not, is there a disadvantage to using Qt client as the miner as well?
3) Anyone have a link to a guide to config Qt miner to join a pool via the debug window? (assuming that 2b is true)?

If anyone wants to throw me a clue about anything obvious I am not understanding, please feel free. I am collecting those also! Tongue

Thanks Smiley

Rit.
