I understand that Bittrex updated their FAQ last week stating that you can swap your ERC20 QTUM coins for the new ones once their main net went live and you have until October 4 to do so.

They also said that they would cease QTUM trading on Bittrex until they were satisfied with the migration or something...

I noticed that QTUM is being traded already right now - so if I were to trade for QTUM right now, are they the new coins or the older ERC20 ones?

No matter the new one the old , you will get the real one accepted by all people.Exchange will not steal your QTUM.

Is this a trend that slowly coins are leaving ERC20 eco system.
It's not that impressive to see coins trying to do their own thing. They really needed to rely on Ethereum so they could survive when they started because they knew that there won't be that many holders trying to keep their coin alive.

Qtum is not an erc20 token but qtum already run on its blockchain, as far as i know the qtum was building its own blockchain rather than use the other platform as the main platform to be their main system.
You can try to use the qtum blockchain too. It's a new coin with new blockchain system.

Qtum will be upgrading from an ERC20 token to their full mainnet blockchain which features an EVM-based smart contract platform.
So qtum on Bittrex balance will be swapped for the new ones at the same amount so if you have 10 you will get 10 of the new ones,
The old qtum tokens will not be tradable on bittrex anymore, the trading will be opened again when qtum agrees that the whole process  went succesfull and good.
