Hi does anyone know if quad 6870 running on 890FXA-GD70 mobo is a good idea?
Sure, depending upon your requirements. It's a bit expensive if you are starting out now.

I see most miners go for the dual card option instead of quad.  Why is that?
Cooling. Cheap mobos.

By having 4x card dont you save more on other hardware cost (no need for another set of mobo/cpu/memory) as well as less electricity?
You sure do.

Is there some hidden inefficiencies in the quad card setup that makes them less ideal?
There is almost no clearance between the dual-slot cards if you have adjacent ones. You should get some PCIe cables or extenders or wedge them apart and get some fans blowing on them.

4x 6870s runs just fine... they are the replacement of the 5830.

Just remember that mining BTC isn't a get rich quick. It'll take a while to pay off for new hardware & electricity.

Thanks, if those are the only concern then they seem pretty minor. On cyberpowerpc they only allow you to configure 3x graphic card (5870) which comes out to be around $1300 total, seems very reasonable for a mining rig.

Do you guys think that's a good rig to buy that has a nice balance between mhash/sec and cost?  Should hit 1200 mhash/sec with minor tweaks.

I think the main concern with quad card setups is the PSU. I'm not too sure about 6870's power usage, but you'll probably need a beefy (1000W+) power supply to support four cards under constant load. Also, the risk of investing in four cards is greater than the investment of two.
