The graphic cards are old gtx 1660 supers and 1660 Ti, they end up running really nice after formatting the harddisk and changing some settings in BIOS, so far this rig is running nicely, with no issues though I've told him to start gathering some money for a better motherboard, I just don't like this core2 because its too oldy, thanks for the contributions.
If you can spend hundreds of dollars on graphic cards how much is a motherboard going to cost you? A good mining motherboard will costs you just 40$ on Aliexpress, there are even few Chinese motherboards that are dedicated for crypto mining, avoid problems from old motherboards.
I used old motherboards because my service center has a lot of old junk. I saved a few hundred dollars, but spent a lot of time fixing various problems with my mining farms, because they are in a different location.
Old motherboards with Intel or AMD processors drew 100 or more watts from the wall, newer motherboards with budget inexpensive processors draw about 50 watts from the wall. But the main thing is stable work, which old motherboards cannot give. I used them, but they worked for a maximum of 2 years.
Exactly,why use old motherboards now when any cheap new motherboard nowadays will easily accommodate that PCIe extender and it will work great with any cards you throw at it,even the newest generation of cards.It is not worthy to go with an old motherboard and just save a 100 bucks and then soon after to notice that things are not going as planned.

I've successfully booted up a core2duo mobo for crypto mining before selling it and buying a better mining motherboard, I tested RX vega 64 on the mobo with two extra 1660 Ti, they worked fine but the mobo consumes more than 100watt that's expected from any motherboard.

I thought the only problem could be working with more than total PCI-e sockets
The oldest motherboard I used, it was with Polaris, I didn't try any RTX on old motherboards...

Make sure the GPUs work with that motherboard. Newer GPUs don't work with very old motherboards.
A splitter probably won't work either.
Instead of trying to put 6 GPUs on an old motherboard, build a 4 GPU rig from scratch with all new equipment.

Just try it out already, I don't see any reason to ask this question because you can never tell, a PCIe extender can be selective at times, most especially on older motherboards, you will get better luck using old GPUs like GTX series I doubt any RTX series would work right.
When I started my first rig I used an asus p7p55d le with 4 slots PCIe and all worked well.
I never tried to put more GPUs, but I can say to you after some experience:
1 - better to use older motherboards with their limit, so in your case 5 GPUs
2 - if your motherboard supports 5 GPUs, it's probably a good one, and there's a good chance to working with 6 GPUs at the same time with an adaptor, so it's your decision
3 - if it's an Asus, more chances to work with 6, I used MSI, Gigabyte, biostar and Asus, and after all, Asus is the easiest one to work with more gpus
4 - you can research the exact model of motherboard on google/youtube/reddit + 6 gpus and see if anyone already tried, it's hard to find something because it's an old model, but there's a chance to find
And least, you didn't say which motherboard you have, it's harder to guess

Your motherboard is more than 10 years old, I'm not sure that it will work stably in mining. I used such motherboards, but they died within 1 year on average.On older motherboards, new video cards may not be detected. Better make the first mining farm of 5 video cards.
