LOL! I suddenly felt that people in India have stopped communicating in Hindi and all only know and understand English while I checked the statistics that only 10% of the population read and write in English Cheesy

Over 50% know Hindi and communicate in this language: http://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-most-widely-spoken-languages-in-india.html

Yes, on BCT almost all understand and write in English but this forum doesn't represent the Indian population.

OP,
Go with English because your site is a freelancer marketplace and the 99% of Indians who visit your site can understand English.

Only 40% of the population can speak fluent Hindi and may be another 20% understands it. But do you think that 20% and the rest will read Hindi scripts on a website?? Hell No!!! Even some Hindi speakers itself don't prefer to read Hindi scripts on the websites.

Dude,
Are you fine?
Who told Hindi is the mother tongue of India?
It may be the mother tongue for some Indian states but not the whole India.

Hindi will not be a bad choice but I suggest that the people will be appropriate with English also.Because India is a country with no official language.India consists of 22 languages spoken by people at different regions.

What you are saying is true but if you know Hindi language then you can survive in India in any state.

I have a feeling you might not even know how many states are there in India.  Smiley

I should say that you are just plain stupid, from where you learned that Hindi is the mother tongue of India,Hindi is just one of the languages spoken in India and we do not have a national language. If you do not know that we have 22 languages which have legal status,we are a diversified nation with many languages and each and every state has its own language.

What you are saying is true but if you know Hindi language then you can survive in India in any state. Their may be lot of languages in India but Hindi is very common language which is spoken in all parts of India. But if anyone is able to read and work in Internet then their wont be problem for them to know English.

Thanks for all the feedback. My take away is that English will be sufficient to service most people in India.

Correct?
correct, all those who are in IT fields know English as it is main language used across globe.and those who are not interested in IT field ,they will never take part in it.so it is basically waste of money if you use it to translate it to Hindi or Kannada .

Not everyone in India understands English and while some understand, they don't talk in English but in Hindi. Also, on BTT everyone knows English and even uses the same but still we have Local sections where mostly they talk in their own language. IF you are targeting the Indian audience as a whole, it's preferred to go with Hindi. Your main website would have English as well and this would be their second option.

Hi, I am adding a translated version for my website https://workingforbitcoins.com/ for the Indian population.

I am trying to determine what language would be best to go with, that most Indian's can read. Would that be Hindi?

If you really want to exchange then yes, "Hindi". Most of the Indian members on forum are Hindi speakers. But I hardly believe anyone of them would be non-English speaker. If an Indian can join this forum, know about Bitcoin, believe me he knows how to speak/read English very well.

I don't see anyone reading a Hindi version of the white paper or the Ann thread of the new altcoins. I know Hindi but reading English and understanding is allot better than reading it in Hindi.
There are very few people who prefer Hindi more than English in these type of matters.
Cheesy
Yeah, that's what I am saying. People hardly cares hindi ANN translations. When we understand cryptocurrencies, then why to make it complicated using "क्रिप्टो मुद्राएं".
Indian population is one of the best English speakers in the world.
