Those people that buy/sell bitcoins, such as those inthe "marketplace" section of the fourm, how do they make a profit when there is a risk that the value of a btc will go down dramatically at any time?

Those that succeed set their prices in a way to offset that risk.

Those that fail don't take the risk into consideration.

It really depends on what the goal is of the trader though.  The more the exchange rate of bitcoin drops, the better off I am with my trades.  The worst thing that can happen for me is for the exchange rate to increase significantly and suddenly.  I can manage with a relatively stable exchange rate, and the best thing for me is for the exchange rate to crash repeatedly.
