if you lost location for wallet, say a dead or stolen pc, but still have your private key, is there a way to find your btc in the chain or is it toast?

Thanks,
James
If you have ur private key, u always have access to your coins.
What method will u use to recover them, for example import it to software wallet/online wallet or mobile wallet, its up to you.

I was deployed to Iraq at the time

As a side note; I thank you for your service!!

Thanks Coin-Keeper.  That was my last of multiple trips ranging from 1990-2010, When I was 20 I swore I would never go back and then celebrated my 40th b-day there.

Your main question is answered. I would only like to add that if there's a chance your computer was stolen or sold and others have a chance to access your data, it could be a very good idea to move your coins to a new address. Better safe than sorry.

How do you import it if you dont know the address?   sounds counter-intuitive

Using your private key , because you said a while ago you have your private key right?Just import it on the electrum wallet by following the mjglqw guide :
On the electrum application, go to File > New / Restore, name your wallet, then proceed to enter your private key there.
and sorry for the misunderstanding in my first comment Grin

If you know your BTC address you can search it in the blockchain.info
If you didnt know what your BTC address you can import it on in electrum wallet

You don't import your wallet using the address. You import your wallet using the private key, which you said that you have access to. On the electrum application, go to File > New / Restore, name your wallet, then proceed to enter your private key there.

Thanks C-G.    I unfortunately was an early adopter but did not buy in heavy and stopped watching completely until recently.    Completely admit it was headlines that caught my eye.   I am several PCs down the road from when I bought and I remember writing down the key but not sure about the address.  Even with key, I'm not sure where it is; I was deployed to Iraq at the time and a lot of things since then are forgotten (short and long term memory issues).    Appreciate the help, just like when I bought the first time, I'm glad the community has people to help the uninformed.  Thanks again.

Do you still have your BTC address? If you have, you can login to your BTC wallet using blockchain wallet.
